 Happy, Happy Friday the 13th!

Although I was not born in North Carolina, I have come to love this part of our fabulous country. After traipsing around the state, mostly using recommendations by my sisters who had relocated here years before, I discovered the North Carolina Museum of Art. It swept me away and when its 164 acres brought me to the open-air Rodin Garden, I was hooked. Huge statues by the sculptor, Auguste Rodin, made ideas swim in my writer's mind. The result?

Another Book Release? Why Not!

It is one month since I released the book Heaven-Sent Warrior, the 1st book in my Warriors in Bronze paranormal romance series. 

This 2nd book in the trilogy, titled Heaven-Sent Highlander, takes the story in a new direction with a Scottish hero and a demon with a personal vendetta.

Here is the plot: 

At an American museum, surrounded by bronze statues by Auguste Rodin, a Scottish Fae beauty is at a crossroads. Now that Gwendolyn’s friends are engaged, and the demon they fought vanquished, should she return home? After committing a terrible act, she could not explain to her cousin why she had appeared on his doorstep.

Alexander awoke in darkness inside a bronze statue. Remembering how the green of Scotland’s Culloden field had turned red with blood and bodies that day in 1746, had he died before awakening nude and sightless in front of strangers in present-day Raleigh, North Carolina? The mystery of how was overshadowed by why. Told that another warrior awoke when a demon threatened to take over the world, had a second demon escaped Hell?

Training with swords and wooden staffs against a powerful Fae warrior is difficult at best and blurry vision made the experience intense. When the demon appears and demands Gwen join him, Alex must use all his new skills and Heaven-sent powers to keep her and the world safe.

Chocolate Chip Cookies from Author Nancy Lee Badger

Life is getting super busy and I keep praying I am up to the task. Scheduling the vaccine for me, hubby, and mom was tougher than it should have been, but I am thrilled we are vaccinated. Assisting my adult son in moving out of his apartment has strained many muscles but I consider it a way to get ready to go back to the gym. I am hard at work finishing up my second book in my Treasure Tales series, a historical romance set in northern England and Scotland. I will get the edits done on The Duke's Diamond after I finalize a fantastic ending, so it can join The Earl's Treasure. Coffee and cookies are my secret to getting through it all!

Nancy's Soft & Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Cover two large baking sheets with parchment paper for easy cleanup. Otherwise use ungreased cookie sheets.

2 1/4 Cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon Crisco or similar shortening

3/4 Cup sugar ( I use Splenda)

3/4 Cup brown sugar

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

2 eggs

2 Cups chocolate chips (I use semi-sweet)

Stir together flour, baking soda, and salt and set aside. Cream together Crisco, sugars, vanilla. Add eggs one at a time. Mix to make sure all are blended. Add dry ingredients, slowly. Fold in chocolate chips and drop by heaping teaspoons onto cookie sheets, leaving about two inches between for spread. Bake about 8 minutes, or until lightly browned on edges. Do not overbake! Let cool on cookie sheets about 5 minutes then slide onto a rack. Repeat and enjoy!

These cookies are delicious and go well with a big glass of milk, too. Making food from scratch with no preservatives is a healthy alternative to store-bought cookies. 

Entertainment during this pandemic is also healthy to a person's well-being so remember to READ BOOKS.

Release Day!

April 22nd was RELEASE DAY for my 28th book, Heaven-sent Flame. In this time of uncertainty, I am glad I work from home. I do miss volunteering as an EMT and Firefighter in the small town of Rumney, New Hampshire, but our move to Raleigh, North Carolina has given me the opportunity to follow my passion to read and write books. Here is a little bit about the 3rd and final book in my Warriors in Bronze series set in both Scotland and North Carolina:

Excerpt from Heaven-sent Flame

Sam slammed the door behind them and threw the bolt. He pushed a button, and a grinding growl was followed by gathering darkness.

“What is that noise?” she yelled over the din, lowering her sword. Until he gave her a full explanation of why he pulled her back into his house, she would stay ready.

“The automatic shutters cover the front windows and the ones on both sides at the touch of a button. I use Bahama-style shutters on the side facing the road and inlet. I will leave them open, so we can keep tabs on the storm.”

More odd words, but if automatic shutters and Bahama shutters protected Sam’s home, that was all that mattered.

As he turned toward her to say something else, the lights inside the house blinked out. He flicked a switch on the wall bedside the door, but nothing happened. “I can wait a bit before pulling them all closed in a few minutes. Otherwise, we’ll be in the dark.”

“I understand.”

“I’m so sorry.” He hugged her, keeping her weapon at a safe distance.

HOT NEWS from Author Nancy lee Badger

Hot news! I recently set aside my writing to help my Mom get her belongings moved from Florida to here in Raleigh, North Carolina. She temporarily moved in with my youngest sister. 

The big problem being the statewide Stay-at-Home order during the Coronavirus pandemic. She could not tour apartments or houses!

As we watched the movers empty the truck she felt better knowing her belongings were now safe and it a climate controlled storage facility. She still had no idea where to live.

However, as we watched the movers with my other sister, we really considered a nearby 55+ community I had toured with this sister. We loved it!

So, after looking with the floorplans on-line and choosing an available unit, we managed to get the lease application filled out. She was accepted! Thank goodness for interactive websites!

Next: pick a move-in date!

Getting back to writing means taking more time off to promote Heaven-sent Flame, which will be released April 22 by Soul Mate Publishing. After that? Who knows? In the meantime, watch for the cover reveal and the pre-order links @Amazon.

My Thoughts on Celtic Mythology

Myths are often considered an aspect of folklore. Even so, mythology might include the belief in the supernatural, where as folklore and folk tales derived when people had the need to explain mysterious events. Pre-Christianity might have had a hand in old world myths and folklore. A people’s yearning to believe in the hereafter, or in some type of entity, lived on through stories passed generation to generation. Once Christianity became widespread, faeries, brownies, and even the belief in the Loch Ness monster faded away.

With a rich Celtic History going back over 2,000 years, it is not surprising that Scotland has an extensive heritage of myths and folklore. Many objects have accumulated their share of myths and legends; circles of stones, cairns, and even castles.

Watching for things that could cause them harm (omens) might have morphed into an ability to come up with causal narratives for natural events (folk tales). Other people had minds of their own with their own beliefs, desires and intentions (mythology and the precursors of organized religion). 

Religion changed everything. Popular Christian beliefs were the norm. Myths and folklore slipped to the back burner, but never disappeared. Many tales are quite popular today. Think of the legend surrounding the Blarney Stone in Ireland or the Loch Ness Monster. Even Girl Scout troops around the world call their youngest recruits ‘Brownies’ after helpful creatures that do good deeds.

Here's hoping March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb (folk tale? Your guess is as good as mine)

Whirling through Wilson NC with Nancy Lee Badger

One bright, hot, July day, I dragged hubby to the car and yelled 'Road Trip'! I have been trying for months to find a day to play hookey and draw myself out of the business of writing to enjoy a drive to visit... Whirligigs.

Our local art museum, where my latest paranormal book series is based, has a hand-built wind-powered colorful sculpture made by artist, Vollis Simpson, who is from the town of Wilson, North Carolina. It is about an hour's drive east of Raleigh. 

While waiting at RDU airport one day, I picked up a brochure about Wilson and brought it home. The photos and descriptions of the town and restaurants intrigued me, but the photo of an actual park dedicated to the artist and filled with his work made me want to see it.

Only after we arrived did we find out that they hold a farmer's market every Wednesday and Saturday along one side of the park under an open-sided pavillion. This was great! Here we were on a very hot Wednesday to check out art, had a place to keep pit of the sun, and we went home with fresh veggies!

The sun beat down brutally so I knew we couldn't stay too long. I took photos and we climbed on the covered stage overlooking a grassy field for a little more shade. Seems the park also hosts music nights and people sit on the grass or bring chairs. I heard there was a museum dedicated to Vollis Simpson in the works, so we have another reason to return to visit the Whirligig Park in Wilson, NC. 

In the meantime, I await the edits from my publisher concerning the 3rd book in my Warriors in Bronze series. It is also set at the fictional Raleigh Museum of Art (based on the NC Museum of Art) to follow Heaven-sent Warrior and Heaven-sent Highlander. Try them!

Summer Time Investments...and Books!

I trimmed the hedges while hubby weedwacked the rocks and tiny grassy areas. It is a humid morning, with temperatures headed to the nineties, but taking care of our property is an investment.

Editing my current book, the 3rd in my Warriors in Bronze series set in North Carolina, before sending it along to my publisher is also an investment. I strive to make it a complete and interesting story, and do my best (with my bad eyes) to make sure there are few grammatical erros...I mean errors. This, in turn, saves my editor's time and I will not need to revise it too much. My 2nd book in the series, Heaven-sent Highlander is selling well.

What are you doing on the last weekend of June to turn your life and the summer (winter, to my Australian readers) into an investment? Have you tried Book #1, Heaven-sent Warrior?

Mother's Day in North Carolina

Mother's Day is a holiday I take to heart. After all, I am the mother of two awesome kids. My boys are grown and gone, living their own lives, but they still keep in touch. Unfortunately, I will not be able to share the day with them. 

Instead, I plan to eat wisely, take a short nap, and read a good book. I enjoy reading books almost as much as I enjoy writing them. 

My 26th release is Heaven-sent Highlander and I am currently writing the third book in the series, Heaven-sent Flame. These, along with Heaven-sent Warrior, are full-length books in my Warriors in Bronze series.

While I enjoy 'my' day, I will find a delicious snack. I might appreciate the lovely North Carolina weather with a possible visit to the NC Museum of Art. This is, after all, is where I set my series.

Then, I will continue reading some of the fantastic books on my book shelf. If YOU are looking for something to read, try one of these!

A New Book Release: A Paranormal Novel: Heaven-sent Highlander

A long time ago, in a pool in Port Orange Florida, I came up with a story based on a Raleigh, North Carolina art museum. My sisters regaled me with stories of the newly opened wing at the North Carolina Museum of Art that included around thirty bronze sculptures by the French master, Auguste Rodin. As an Art major, who has visited numerous museums, I had my paranormal story half written before I ever discovered the Rodin Garden on the museum's one hundred and sixty four acres. The first book in my Warriors in Bronze series, Heaven-sent Warrior, was released last July. Heaven-sent Highlander was released TODAY and I am thrilled.

     Another day passed with Henrí sharing his knowledge about the abilities Rodin had instilled in him which included conjuring, blinking, and healing.

    “Do I have all these powers? I never met Auguste Rodin.”

    “No one spoke odd words to you before you found yourself inside the statue?” Henrí asked.

    “Wait. On the battlefield at Culloden. As I lay mortally wounded, someone held me. They comforted me with soft words I could not understand. They forced a vile potion down my throat. Next thing I remember was waking inside my tomb.”

    Henrí’s smile made Alex relax. “Alex, that must have been the holy one sent to transport you somewhere, until Heaven needed your help.”

    “What?” Although surprised, he knew Henrí spoke true. Who would have such power except someone from Heaven?

    “One of our Heavenly masters chose us to be guardians of the gates.”

    “I am a warrior, not a gatekeeper.”

I took lots of photos of the beautiful works of art at the museum (which I refer to as the Raleigh Museum of Art, in my book) and will soon add videos of my excursions through the halls and around the grounds of the museum.

Hot news! I sat down, while helping Mom in Florida, and redesigned my website. It’s a one-stop place to see all my book titles and learn a little bit about me. Please check it out

I just returned from spending 6 weeks in Florida. Dad passed away February 2nd and Mom was ill. She is much better, and I am back in Raleigh, NC with dear hubby and my muse, Blaze.

I kept writing while I was away...with my laptop on my lap while sitting in the hospital, or when Mom napped. Edits for Heaven-sent Highlander are complete and the book comes out in less than a month.

An outline and the first 10 chapters of my next book, Heaven-sent Flame, are complete and I will stay busy the next few months creating adventures for my characters.

I came up with several plot ideas and a bunch of scenarios, so I will get back to my writing. Thanks for following me!
