An Interview with Writer Mike Sager of The Sager Group LLC

Please join me in welcoming Mike Sager, who will soon be speaking at the WRITE NOW 2018 Conference here in Raleigh, NC. MIke, please tell my readers a little bit about your writing.

Mike- I’m in my 40th year of typing the good fight. I’ve written and edited for college publications, alt weeklies, newspapers, magazines and books. I also now publish books and make documentary and commercial films and videos. For the past 26 years I’ve been a writer for Esquire. I’ve done dozens of celebrity profiles and a number of my crime stories have become movies, but I’m most proud of my work as a literary anthropologist, which means I live with groups of people for long periods of time and write about their lives. Over the last four decades, I’ve spent time with a crack gang, teenage pitbull fighters, artist/heroin addicts, wounded marines, football players in Samoa, Aryan Nations troopers, a high school boy, a butler in a ritzy household, Tupperware saleswomen, swingers, Peter Dinklage and many more. I have seven collections of stories.  Kirkus Reviews once wrote: “Sager plays Virgil in the modern American Inferno.” That’s probably my favorite review of all time, besides this one, from The New York Times Book Review, which links me to the chain of writers I consider my forefathers, along with Gay Talese: “Like his journalistic precursors, Tom Wolfe and Hunter S. Thompson, Sager writes frenetic, off-kilter pop-sociological profiles of Americans in all their vulgarity and vitality. He writes with flair, but only in the service of an omnivorous curiosity. He defies expectations in pieces that lesser writers would play for satire or sensationalism.”

Nancy- Did you have several manuscripts or articles finished before you sold? If so, did you send them out yourself?

Mike- Over 40 years I’ve had some of the biggest name agents in New York. Now I have a lawyer. Agents are necessary as gate keepers because of the way the system works. Luckily, at this point, I know personally many of the top editors in New York. And I also have my own publishing company, because, frankly, if you don’t have one of the big books at a big publishing house, you can make more money and get just as much help from the publisher if you do it yourself. Over time, as I accrued more expertise, experience and kudos, I kind of became annoyed about the prospect of asking people with less experience and far less accomplishment to pass judgement on my work. This works okay for me because I’ve always been sort of a niche product. Certain people seek out my work. I’m not a huge bestselling writer, though I’ve had a number of best sellers. The most important thing to me:  do the work. I’m with Kevin Cosner: If you build it they will come. I’ve always just tried my hardest to be the best I can be. I still wake up with that intention every morning.

Nancy- Why do you ‘do’ what you ‘do’.

Mike- I am most happy when I’m typing. I love the craft of making words into art. I love learning about things and understanding them deeply. Over the years I have also learned the joys and gathered the wisdom that comes with empathizing deeply with others who are different than yourself. Visiting other cultures and learning their ways, both domestic and foreign, has given me insight; I’ve learned to find common ground with others; I’ve never failed to make a lifelong friend while doing a story, even if the person’s outlook is very different than mine. All I’ve learned was put most succinctly by one of my subjects, the comedienne Roseanne, who once told me: “All hate is fear; all fear is insecurity.”  The piece about Roseanne is featured in my bestselling collection Revenge of the Donut Boys, which has just been republished as a second edition.

Nancy- Tell us about The Sager Group

Mike- The Sager Group was founded in 1984. In 2012 it was chartered as a consortium of multi-media artists and writers, with the intent of empowering people who create—an umbrella beneath which makers can pursue, and profit from, their craft directly, without gatekeepers. TSG designs and publishes books and eBooks; ministers to artists and provides modest grants; and produces and distributes documentary, feature, and commercial films. By harnessing the means of production, The Sager Group helps artists help themselves, artifex te adiuva. Our most recent project is our series of text/anthologies celebrating Women in Journalism. The first two: The Stories We Tell and Newswomen. We are also featuring a second edition of Elizabeth Kaye’s bestselling Lifeboat No. 8: Surviving the Titanic. I am most proud to say I have been joined in my efforts lately by the addition of my son, Miles Sager, as Creative Director of TSG Films. Working with him is my greatest joy.

Nancy- Did chasing any article put you in physical danger?

Mike- Living with a crack gang in Los Angeles—street violence, drug use, drive by shootings-- and in a Palestinian refugee camp—rubber bullets and mistrust-- both in the late 1980s, were my most dangerous assignments. My friendship with Super Freak Rick James was kind of crazy too. (See Scary Monsters and Super Freaks .) My first job at The Washington Post (after being promoted from copy boy) was as night police reporter at a time when the nation’s capital was roiling with violence; I learned there the taste for danger, and also the taste for the kind of weird attention that violence and mayhem brings to your pieces. My first rule of writing: Thou shalt not bore. Working in the “underbelly” of society never is, and people read for entertainment. I also learned that the way the “criminal element” is depicted in the press is usually hyperbole. I guess it comes down to: Criminals are people too. They’re just working in a shadow economy. But you have to lay down your preconceptions before you arrive. And you have to lay down your judgement to be with people. I reserve that right for the typing process.
Many years ago, on the Monday after I became engaged to be married, I attended a week long swingers’ convention. That was pretty dangerous, too.

Nancy- What is your writing routine like?

Mike- Every day I wake up, eat breakfast, skim the paper newspaper, and go downstairs to my office. I work until noon. I eat something. I work until four. I exercise or watch hoops. I eat and sometimes work for another hour. Through the day I switch projects, depending upon what is due. In the old days I spent a lot of time coaching and parenting. I’m an empty nester now. My partner works a lot of hours and lives in a different house. It suits me.

Nancy- Having achieved your goals, what is the most rewarding thing?

Mike- My goal was always to make a living typing and to “see how far I can go.” I’m not done yet--though I will say the economic crash of 2008 and the rise of the internet has changed my life dramatically. For most of my career I was a staffer or a contract writer—weekly or monthly checks-- at a major publication. That’s all gone now. So that’s fun. The most rewarding thing is making something out of nothing. To create art is to become a god. After that, it’s hard to have a hobby.

Mike will be a Guest Speaker at the

Nancy Lee Badger Interviews Author Jeannie Moon

Jeannie Moon stopped by to share intimate details of her writing life and to tell us about her latest book. Then Came You, a contemporary romance was released on September 26, 2017. Please tell my readers a little bit about your book.

Jeannie- Then Came You is a contemporary romance that celebrates second chances. Set in a small coastal town on Long Island’s north shore, it’s the first book in the Compass Cove series. The book, and the series, focus on characters finding their true north—their place to belong. Filled with colorful characters, and a centuries-old romantic legend, the town is as memorable as each of the romances.
In book one, Mia and Adam appear to be polar opposites, but they both landed in Compass Cove for a fresh start.

Nancy- I just got back from Long Island, visiting relatives and the 'old family homestead' in Huntington! This sounds like a book for me. Back on topic: when did you start writing toward publication?

Jeannie- I started writing in 2000 and it took me 12 years to get my first contract.

Nancy- Did you have several manuscripts finished before you sold? If so, did you send them out yourself?

Jeannie- I had three books finished, but I sold a proposal for a new series to NAL’s digital imprint, Intermix. The editor knew my work and wanted to work with me so she asked me to take a stab at an idea.  I did send some out on my own, but I have also worked with agents, some good, one not-so-good.

Nancy- Why have you become a published author?

Jeannie- The reason I achieved my goal is because I didn’t give up.

Nancy- "Never give up, never surrender" are the words I live by. What is your writing routine like?

Jeannie- I have a full time job, so I write at night, usually an hour or so, and I do a lot of writing on the weekends. If I’m close to deadline, I’m up at four in the morning.

Nancy- Having achieved your goal to be a published author, what is the most rewarding thing?

Jeannie- The romance community is the best thing. I’ve met great people, from authors, to readers to bloggers….I love the people.

Nancy- Are you a member of any writing organizations and, if so, have they helped?

Jeannie- I’m a member of Long Island Romance Writers and CT-RWA, both chapters of RWA. I’m published because I’m active in my local chapters. They’ve given me knowledge and resources I couldn’t get on my own.

Nancy- I love my local chapter, and the on-line RWA chapters I belong to. Wonderful, diverse, and helpful people. Will you share some encouraging words for authors still struggling for that first contract?

Jeannie- Don’t give up. It can take years sometimes, but if you keep learning, keep working, you will find success.

Nancy- Please Share three fun facts about you that most people don’t know.

1)  I keep a stash of Nutella in the house. I’m the only one who knows where it is.
2)  I can sing.
3)  I’ve been in more than one pro-sports locker room.

Nancy- What’s next for you?

Jeannie- Book two in the series is with my editor and comes out in the spring. It’s called You Send Me.

You can read an excerpt here, and there are links to all booksellers.

MORE ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Jeannie Moon has always been a romantic. Nancy Lee Badger Interviews Barbara White Daille

Today I’m interviewing BARBARA WHITE DAILLE. Her book, The Rancher’s Baby Proposal, is a short contemporary romance and was released on May 1, 2017. Please tell my readers a little bit about your book.

Barbara- Ally, the heroine, has been in love with Reagan Chase forever! But their romance needs a few nudges from her best friend’s matchmaking grandpa, the owner of the Hitching Post Hotel. FYI, the books in all my series stand alone as far as the romance wrapping up in each couple’s book.

Nancy- When did you start writing toward publication?

Barbara- I’ve been “writing” since before kindergarten and writing toward publication since grade school, probably, when I handwrote and submitted poetry and short stories to Highlights for Children. (Unfortunately, they never acquired any of my work.)

Nancy- Did you have several manuscripts finished before you sold? If so, did you send them out yourself?

Barbara- Yes, I had several full-length manuscripts written and submitted (and rejected) before I sold. These were romantic suspense, short contemporary romance, and a not-quite-finished cozy mystery. But my first sales were short stories to romance and mystery magazines, including Woman’s World. And yes, I submitted everything myself.

Nancy- Why have you become a published author?

Barbara- You know, this is one question I can’t help answering the same in every interview, because the response comes from the heart. I want to reach readers, and I hope my books give them as much pleasure as other authors’ stories have brought to me.

Nancy- Will you share some encouraging words for authors still struggling for that first contract?

Barbara- Sure. Write what you love most, because when you sell, your editor will most likely want to see more of the same. Remember, only you can tell your characters’ stories. And don’t ever give up.

Nancy- Please Share three fun facts about you that most people don’t know.

Barbara- I’m giving this topic a theme.  ;) Vehicles I Have Driven:
1) Bus
2) Fire engine
3) Model T (Note, it was an original, not a replica – but I didn’t drive it until it was an antique!)

Nancy- What’s next for you?

Barbara- My Snowflake Valley series from Entangled Bliss, which began with Snowbound with Mr. Wrong, continues with book two this fall and book three early next year. No firm titles yet, but I’ll be announcing details in my newsletter as I get them!

BOOK BLURB from The Rancher's Baby Proposal

HER SECRET COWBOY CRUSH

Ally Martinez has always been known as a fun and flirty kind of gal.  But deep down she’s never forgotten the cowboy who left town. When her crush Reagan Chase comes home after a five-year absence, Ally knows this is her big chance. The guy I’ve always wanted. Only Reagan has something different in mind…

Still reeling from his last relationship, Reagan needs a babysitter for his month-old son. With Ally’s help, he can get his family’s ranch ready for sale and get out of Cowboy Creek. The problem? Ally is one seriously cute distraction. But Reagan will do whatever it takes to keep his heart safe. Even if it means losing the only place—and the only woman—he can call home.  >

Excerpt: Just a quick setup for this look at the story: Ally is inexperienced and uncomfortable when it comes to being around kids. This is her first time alone with Reagan’s son:

As she pulled the car up to the ranch house, Ally peeked into her rearview mirror at the car seat Reagan had left for her at Mrs. Browley’s house. Luckily, she had gotten instructions from Tina on the right way to install the seat in the car and then how to fasten the baby safely inside.
Another mirror suction-cupped to the back window reflected the infant’s image. In the frequent quick peeks she had taken on the drive to the ranch, she hadn’t seen him stir. Now, his eyes were open, blinking in the light, staring up at the mirror.
“Hey, baby,” she said softly. “So, you’re awake. Listen, the two of us are going to get along great. No tricks, no temper tantrums on your part. And only first-class care on mine. I promise you that. After all, I’ve been trained by the best. There’s nothing like learning your trade from a brand-new mama.”
She winced. As far as she knew, the baby didn’t have a mama. Had he ever heard the word before? How would he react at hearing it from her?
But he lay still in his seat, blinking lazily.
She took a deep breath and let it out again. Now or never. She would rather never, but that hadn’t been the agreement she had made with Reagan.
She went to the rear passenger door and knelt on the backseat to unhook the safety harness. “This is only your first time out here at the ranch, isn’t it?” Her hands shook just a tiny bit. So did her voice.
The baby looked up at her. He had slept through the entire ride, as if the bouncing of her car on the frequently uneven road had soothed him. Maybe the wobbly sound of her voice had the same effect. If that was the case, she would let her nerves take over and talk to him all day long.

Nancy- How can my readers buy your book?

Barbara- Readers can go to my author page at the publisher’s website or to any of the locations in the links below.  The book is available in both print and digital formats.

Nancy Lee Badger Interviews Author Kate Hill

Kate Hill stopped by to share her latest book and intimate details of her writing life. Her book, Fangs and Fists 3: Victor is an erotic paranormal romance and was released on July 28th. Please tell my readers a little bit about your book.

Kate- In the Fangs and Fists series, demons have taken over Earth and rule from towers based in cities all over the world. For entertainment, the demons have captured werewolves and use them to fight in gladiatorial matches. Victor is a gladiator and the Alpha male of his house. Jolanda is a rare wolf witch who comes to the tower under the pretense of joining the demons, but she really plans to free the captive wolves. To do this, she realizes she needs Victor’s help. Though he’s attracted to her, he doesn’t trust her. She needs to convince him that she’s not a traitor to her kind so that they can find a way to escape the tower.

Nancy- When did you start writing toward publication?

Kate- I started when I was about sixteen, though it took ten years before my first story was accepted for publication. It was a short, erotic vampire story.

Nancy- Do you have any rejection stories to share?

Kate- My first published novel, The Darkness Therein, was rejected several times before it finally found a home. One rejection stuck in my mind. This particular publisher rejected it because my heroine, who was a young college student, acted too much like a young college student. That comment still makes me chuckle.

Nancy- Having achieved your goal to be a published author, what is the most rewarding thing?

Kate- It’s always rewarding when someone tells me they’ve read one of my stories and enjoyed it. Reading a good story makes me happy, and if something I’ve written makes someone else happy, that’s a wonderful feeling.

Nancy- Please share three fun facts about you that most people don’t know.
1) I generally dislike romantic comedy movies.
2) I don’t like coffee.
3) I get motion sickness.

Nancy- What’s next for you?

Kate- Right now I’m working on Fangs and Fists 4: Haylen.

BOOK BLURB

Werewolf gladiator Victor vows to escape captivity by demons or die trying--which nearly happens when his latest opponent takes him by surprise.

Jolanda is a member of a secret pack of wolf witches who want to free their kin from the dreaded demon tower. Strengthened by the power of her pack, she defeats Victor in the arena and demands that he be given to her as a mate.

Alone, they surrender to their overwhelming lust for each other, but Jolanda needs him for more than sex. She's been sent to rescue the captive wolves and Victor is the Alpha she needs to help her. Together he and Jolanda plan a mass escape from the tower, hoping to strike a blow the demon masters will never forget.

Nancy- How can my readers buy your book?

Nancy Lee Badger Interviews Author Marlo Berliner

The Angel of the Sea Hotel
Marlo Berliner stopped by to talk about her book, The Ghost Chronicles. It is an upper YA with adult crossover appeal and was released on November 17, 2015. She will also be releasing the next book soon! Please tell my readers a little bit about your book.

Marlo- The best stories lie at the intersection of truth and imagination. The Ghost Chronicles began this way, as well. I had my ‘eureka’ moment one day while reading Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets with my son. Chapter Eight, The Deathday Party, deals with the ghosts in the Hogwarts Castle and what it might be like to ‘live’ in the afterlife, so that provided the spark that ignited the fire to write The Ghost Chronicles. At the same time, I was also thinking about a truth from my past. When I was seventeen I was in a car accident that wasn’t my fault. An accident that almost took my life. The thought of ‘what if I had died’ has been one that has haunted me ever since. So immediately I knew I wanted The Ghost Chronicles to be not only a story of what it’s like to be stuck in the afterlife, but I also wanted it to be about a boy who dies tragically through no fault of his own. The kind of story ripped from the headlines about a promising young person who has their life taken away far too soon. It won’t be completely apparent until later in the series, but I wanted it to be a story of great hope for anyone who has lost someone tragically, particularly someone young. I’m also hoping readers will take away the theme embodied in this quote from the book – “Cherish life, it’s absolutely precious.” The final piece of the love story in The Ghost Chronicles fell into place after I stayed at The Angel of the Sea, an award-winning bed and breakfast in Cape May, NJ. This spectacular inn has been featured on several television programs and in magazines throughout the world. Most notably, it was chosen by Oprah Winfrey as one of the “Best Vacations in the World” and included in her television talk show. The two buildings of The Angel of the Sea are so iconic, that it is one of the most recognized Victorian structures in the United States. Legend has it that in the late 1960’s, a girl did fall to her death at the Angel of the Sea and did at one time, haunt the inn. The story of the girl has been included in several non-fiction books about ghosts in Cape May. Sarah’s character in The Ghost Chronicles was inspired by this legend and after staying at this romantic inn, I also decided to make The Angel of the Sea the setting for the book.

Nancy- Wow! My skin is crawling, so let's change it up a little. Having achieved your goal to be a published author, what is the most rewarding thing?

Marlo- For me, the most rewarding thing has been hearing from fans and reviewers that they are thrilled with the book, and also having the book recognized with so many awards and accolades. The Ghost Chronicles was the book of my heart, and all the praise has made me feel I wasn’t crazy for writing it.

Please Share three fun facts about you that most people don’t know.
1) I went to high school and Carnegie Mellon University with actor Ethan Hawke before he left to make Dead Poet Society. We’ve played Thumper together.
2) Walter Matthau once asked me to marry him. The story is on my blog HERE
3) I’m going to be an extra in Code 8, a sci-fi movie with Stephen Amell, Robbie Amell, and Greg Bryk.

Nancy- Exciting. The closest I got to fame was as a walk-on spot on the soap opera, Another World MANY years ago. Besides stardom, what’s next for you as an author?

Marlo- I’ll be releasing The Ghost Chronicles, Book 2 on July 11th, 2017. The last and final book in The Ghost Chronicles series will be released sometime in 2018. I’ll also have a book of inspirational short stories out later in 2017. My agent is currently shopping around one YA novel, and I have three others I’m working on.

BOOK BLURB:
Can Michael get to heaven before the devil gets him first, and if it means leaving Sarah is he sure he still wants to go?

Michael Andrews had everything - a loving family, a great girlfriend and a promising basketball career. That was before the accident that took his life. Now, he's a ghost, wandering among the living, struggling to understand why he's stuck. All he wants is to move on.

That is until he meets Sarah, an attractive young girl who died just as tragically as he did. The only trouble is falling in love and binding oneself to another soul is forbidden, for it may keep one or both of the souls bound to earth for longer than they should be.

To make matters worse, there's also a danger in going too far with Sarah, because the "joining" of two souls in the afterlife is also strictly forbidden and they don't know what will happen if they do go that far. Each time they touch they can feel the boundaries of their energies slipping perilously into one another.

Things get even more complicated as Michael learns he's being pursued. Demons are after him because he's a marked soul, a soul the devil wants very badly for some unknown reason.

So, maybe falling in love in the afterlife isn't such a good idea.

EXCERPT
In a quiet voice, she asked, “Did you love that girl?”
He needed to be truthful. “I thought so at the time.”
“And now?” Her eyes betrayed her hopefulness.
Stepping closer to her, he said, “Things have changed…in more ways than one. I really missed you.”
“I missed you, too,” she said in a whisper. “I was beginning to think you’d forgotten all about me…or maybe moved on.”
“I could never forget you, Sarah.” He stared at her lips, longing to kiss her.
She met his gaze and a light flickered in her own eyes.
Instinctively, they leaned closer to one another. As the distance between them dwindled, Michael felt that magnetic pull taking over once again. He brushed one hand gently on her cheek, sliding his other arm around her waist. Slowly, he pulled her close.
Everywhere their spirit bodies touched was instantly electrified with an amazing tingling sensation and warmth. He could tell by her reaction she felt it too.
Now for the moment of truth. He let his lips brush lightly against hers. As before, a pleasurable tingling passed between them. Sarah closed her eyes in a silent surrender and he pressed his lips to hers. Hot and intense, the kiss was better than any he’d ever had. For an immeasurable breadth of time he kissed her, savoring the heat, his mouth moving hungrily over hers.
To be warm again, to tingle again, to feel again, these sensations were so familiar, yet already so forgotten.
