Remember our Troops!

Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those who have died while serving in the various branches of the military of the United States of America.

"Every citizen should be a soldier. This was the case with the Greeks and Romans, and must be that of every free state."--Thomas Jefferson

We no longer have a military draft, but thousands of our men and women volunteer to serve their country, to keep its citizens safe.

Former President Lyndon Johnson declared it a national holiday in May 1966, and this year the USA celebrates it on Monday, May 29th. It is not as happy a holiday as Veteran's Day, where we celebrate our citizens who have served in our military. Memorial Day is a day to remember those who have given the ultimate sacrifice.

This weekend often includes trips to the beach, hikes through the mountains, gatherings with friends or families, and barbecues. Please take a moment to remember those we have lost. Here are a few who my family salute.

A Quote for Veteran's Day

"Every citizen should be a soldier. This was the case with the Greeks and Romans, and must be that of every free state." Thomas Jefferson

I can remember our country's military draft, the lottery, and young men fleeing the United States for Canada, so they did not have to serve in the military.

Things changed. There is no draft and no more lottery. Young men sign-up without coercion, and many serve their country with dignity and grace. They come back to civilian life with experience, and a sense of purpose. They attend college, join the work force, and fall in love. Some have problems, including a rather high suicide rate. November 11th is Veteran's Day in the United States of America. Please...hug a Veteran!

HUG A VETERAN

November 11th is Veteran's Day here in America. This year it lands on 11*11*11. The signifigance is not lost on many. The celebration is always held on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. This year will be the first time all the numbers line up.

Speaking of lining up, I plan to watch my son march in our local parade with his fellow reservists. I cannot help being proud, and came across this quote. Unless you are in the military, or are part of a military family, or the mother of a soldier (like me), these words might not mean much. I hope you read them, feel them, and thank a soldier.
My son Eric is on the far right!

Theirs is not to make reply. Theirs is not to reason why, Theirs is but to do and die. -Alfred, Lord Tennyson
