Fighting Fires in Books by Author Nancy Lee Badger

I recently enjoyed lunch at a little place called Barry's Cafe in Cary, North Carolina. They offer a discount to former and current firefighters. In fact, the walls are covered with badges, helmets, and an axe or two.

Years ago, I became an EMT (emergency medical technician) for the local volunteer fire department in Rumney, New Hampshire. Later, my hubby and I joined the actual fire department. We got boots, bunker gear, helmets, and everything!

Even later, I became an emergency medical dispatcher, also known as a 911 operator, for the State of New Hampshire. To say we support rescue and safety personnel is a given. Ideas for some of my books came from my past experiences. Here are a few:

December Books by Nancy Lee Badger

Another week, another new month, and the holiday lights are up outside our house. All that's left is to decorate the tree. It's only four feet tall and artificial. We used to cut our own tree when we lived in rural New Hampshire, but once my mother-in-law passed, we decided to use her little tree. We moved to North Carolina and into a small ranch house. The tree looks fine.

Last year, the tree went up but I never got the time to decorate it. Seems a relative was ill, then tested positive for Covid-19, which put our house into quarantine. That lasted until we got tested on December 31st (both negative) so the Christmas holiday and even New Year's were quiet celebrations.

However you enjoy the holidays, remember to keep safe and think of others by wearing your mask. It protected hubby and me.

And if you are looking for books
to put under the tree...

Happy Holidays!

Banana-Walnut Bread & a Book from Nancy Lee Badger

What do you do when bananas turn brown? You bake with them!

Here in Raleigh, North Carolina I am amazed how fast bananas that were green in the supermarket start getting spotty at home.

Many folks do not realize that their flavor magnifies as they get ripe. When this happens in our house, I drag out the flour and chop up some walnuts (or dig up a bag of chocolate-chips) and enjoy the smell and absolutely divine taste of:

Nancy's Banana-Walnut Bread

2 1/2 Cups all-purpose flour

1 Cup sugar

3 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

3 Tablespoons salad oil

3/4 Cup milk

1 egg

1 Cup bananas, mashed

1/2 Cup or more walnuts or chocolate chips (I chop walnut halves into bits. Easier on the teeth)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease or spray two 8 inch loaf pans (or one 9 inch) with PAM and flour them to prevent sticking. At Christmas, I made three smaller loafs in 7 inch by 4 inch disposable aluminum pans which makes it easier to share the final product with other home-bound folks!

Measure all ingredients except nuts or chips into a mixer bowl. Beat on medium speed about 1/2 minute, scraping bowl sides and bottom. Fold in chips or nuts. Pour into prepared pans.

Baking times: consider them done when golden brown and inserted knife comes out clean-

*two 8 inch pans, bake about 40 minutes

*one 9 inch pan, bake about 50 minutes

*three small foil pans, bake about 30 minutes

Cool at least 7 minutes, then turn onto a rack to cool. If sharing the small ones with others, leave them in the aluminum pans and wrap in more foil. Freeze any for later.

A slice of banana bread, warmed in the microwave for 10 seconds, makes a great snack anytime. Sip a cup of coffee or tea and relax with a book. If you like SWEET romance that goes along perfectly with banana bread, how about checking out my book RESCUING CHRISTMAS. Is it snowing where you live? Well, it isn't in my book, which sparks all kinds of trouble.

"Vermont is lovely this time of year,

but where is the snow?"

Entertainment during this pandemic is also healthy to a person's well-being so remember to READ BOOKS. For a quick, sweet, adventurous story, this book is available in ebook or print.

After the Gifts are Unwrapped...

The biggest holiday of the year is just a memory, but with the New Year revelry just around the corner, now is the time to look back and enjoy 2019. Bright lights, fireworks, and crowds are the norm, but I look forward to a quiet night watching the North Carolina Acorn drop. I write books with Scottish characters, so I will celebrate Hogmanay (New Year's Eve) my way.

I want to share my good fortune. Another royalty check just came through the door with last minute Christmas greetings, my health is better, and we have enough leftover food in the frig to survive any apocalypse. So, my recent ebook, Rescuing Christmas, is on sale until January 5th for only $.99 (US)

I am also giving away a prize CLICK HERE to one lucky winner. Quail Ridge Books is my local independent bookstore. They carry thousands of titles including my own Heaven-sent Warrior and Heaven-sent Highlander! They also ship just about anywhere.

This week is bittersweet. December 27th was my cousin Lee's birthday. She's been gone 13 months, but the pain is fresh. My dad left us on February 2nd, and Uncle Paul passed, too.

My Dad, Robert F. Beegle
We can remember the good times with them, but the rest of us must soldier on, right? We can wave to a neighbor, drive a little slower, feed the birds, spend extra time on the treadmill, donate to the food bank, watch our pennies so we can get those home improvements done, and so much more. Enjoy the time you have.

May I suggest reading a book?

Winter Wonderland EBOOK SALE!

ice ciclesWhile my edits for my next book are in the hands of my editor, I thought about what I could do to stir up some new readers. With 27 books published so far, I am always looking for a bigger and wider audience.

This is one reason why I wrote Rescuing Christmas. It is a small-town sweet romance.

A Manhattan businessman on a December vacation to Canada, is stuck in Boston due to a snowstorm. Instead of waiting for another flight, he drives through the Vermont woods. Forced off the road, his rental ends up in a pond. When a firefighter sliding down the muddy slope to help him slams into him instead, his papers go flying and his phone disappears. Before he can complain, his mud-covered rescuer in firefighting bunker gear is a woman!

Christmas is Right around the Corner

...and my book was just released! The ebook's special pricing will end soon, so why not download a
copy today?

The basic premise is this...

Vermont is lovely this time of year, but where is the snow?

A Manhattan businessman in a Vermont ditch meets a muddy female firefighter. No snow since November might ruin the town’s annual fire department fundraiser. Can Elinor and Bradley stop their squabbling long enough to Rescue Christmas?

Excerpt

A lone figure stood on the roof where fire spewed toward the sky.
“Dear Lord!” Bradley had spotted Elinor. She stood encased in smoke, just below the roof’s peak.
A firefighter raced by him, heading in the other direction. “Sean! Elinor is in trouble. Help her!”
Ignoring Bradley’s plea, Sean disappeared beyond the fire truck. Was he coming back?
Bradley was running before he knew he had moved. He grabbed a helmet and a pair of fire-retardant gloves off the back of the firetruck. Racing to the side of the house where flames licked from an upstairs window, he called up to her. “Elinor! Are you all right?”
She didn’t answer and appeared to be bending over, choking on the smoke. He had to save her, but how? Cinders spewed from the open window, and he tripped over something laying in the grass. “A ladder! Hold on. I’m coming!”
He slapped the helmet on his head, then pulled on the gloves. Seizing the heavy aluminum ladder, he struggled with its weight, but managed to prop it against the house. It barely reached the roofline where he had last seen Elinor.
“Elinor! Walk to the ladder!”
Could she hear him? The smoke was choking him, but he would not leave without her. Elinor must not have spotted it, so he slipped his glasses in his coat pocket and raced up the ladder. The helmet slipped sideways and the gloves were cumbersome, but Elinor’s safety was paramount.
Reaching the top, heavy smoke drifted into his eyes and throat and his cough must have caught her attention. The flames from a hole in the roof had been replaced with smoke, so she jumped over the hole and grabbed the top of the tall ladder.

“What are you doing up here?” she asked.

Favorite Summer Reads...and More!

I read a lot. Most is research because a writer writes better when they read what works. Writers, as a rule, do not copy the actual words in books they read, but get a sense of 'what works' and try to make them work in their own stories.

I read lots of cozy mysteries, but don't write them. I also read quite a few regency historicals, but I have yet to publish mine (in the works!) I love stories about dragons, and have written several of my own. In fact, I created a whole series that I set in Scotland.

Highlanders? Love them and write about them, but the books I read that are written by others are always as different as night and day. Time travel romance and other paranormal romances get my motor running, which is why so many books by me use all these themes. Might I recommend these books for your end-of-summer reading?

My next book is a little off track...it is a sweet romance. Yes, there is sexual tension between adults, but they don't jump into bed by chapter three...or at the end. Romance and the awakening of feelings fills the book...think Hallmark TV movies.

Rescuing Christmas is available for pre-order at an introductory price. Please take a moment to check it out HERE

Hot Summertime Travels

An opportunity came up for me to accompany one of my sons to visit my mom (his grandmother) in Florida for a short visit. I jumped, since it had been sweltering here in North Carolina. It was hot in Florida, too, but her complex had a pool!

Heavy rains during the drive down pushed us into a big store's parking lot and we got drenched while shopping (someone needed a bathing suit).

The sun came out and the pool was relaxing. I also noticed the rain had brightened the flowers and leafy plants surrounding the property. It was such a pretty sight and I took a moment to photograph them.

The rain arrived each afternoon, but we made sure to enjoy the pool early in the day. When we decided to buy lobster and corn instead of heading to a restaurant on the pier, we got drenched when my son dropped us off at the door at Publix. Mom mentioned that if we had followed through with those plans and had parked then walked halfway down an ocean pier to the restaurant, we would have gotten even worse!

The meal was easy to cook, since I'd lived in New England for decades before moving south, although mom's two pots only fit one live lobster each. We had to cook the corn in a lobster bath. It was yummy and I was thrilled to see everyone happy and dry.

We drove back to where the weather was still sweltering close to 100 degrees, but knowing we had enjoyed ourselves and made each of us rekindle a good relationship with my mother is priceless.

I wish we have a pool here in Raleigh, but I can dream.

In the meantime, I will continue to work on getting my next book ready for release.

COVER REVEAL! Check Out the Next Book by Nancy Lee Badger

My next book is a deviation from the norm. Oh, it has firefighters and a beautiful New England setting, but no open-door sex. This is a Sweet Romance and i hope it will connect with many more readers.

Book Blurb
A Manhattan businessman on a December vacation to Canada, is stuck in Boston due to a snow storm.

After a fire, her injured dad heads to the hospital and hands responsibility for the fire department to her. As acting Fire Chief, Elinor Danville offers the stranded stranger a ride. When she drops him at the Peabody Inn, Ellie explains that Snowflake Valley has no rental cars, taxis, or 5-star hotels Something about this suit-wearing rich guy grates on her nerves, but intrigues her. Unfortunately, her responsibilities include the upcoming Christmas Festival. The lack of snow could ruin everything.

Stuck in Snowflake Valley for several days, Bradley is swept up in the people, their volunteerism, their problems, and commitment to see that the Christmas Festival goes on no matter what. His interest in the town and a pretty firefighter makes Bradley come up with a few ideas of his own. By rescuing Christmas for Elinor and the townspeople, can he make her truly see him, and not the suited businessman only interested in going home?

What? A Christmas story in August? Well, not really. It will be available for pre-order next month then will officially release on October 15th.
