Nancy Lee Badger Presents Author Maeve Greyson

First off, I’d like to thank Nancy for welcoming me to her blog today to chat about my newest release, KATIE’S HIGHLANDER. A time travel romance from Loveswept—a Penguin Random House Imprint. This book came out just last week on January 22nd. It’s the third installment of my Highland Protector Series about a family of tenth century druid Highland warriors brought forward in time by the goddesses to protect an ancient relic fabled to keep hope and love alive in the world. This book is the third son’s, Ramsay MacDara’s, story.

Ramsay is recovering from the humiliating sting of a gold-digger’s touch and has decided to be a solitary druid. But the gods and goddesses have other ideas. Ramsay is needed back in the past and they’re not about to send him alone. Katie Jenson is an archeologist on sabbatical from Princeton. She wrecks her car on MacDara land, but that wild ride is nothing compared to a jaunt back to the year 917 A.D. with Ramsay. History takes on a whole new meaning and becomes both heart and home.
Blurb:

An archaeologist with a zest for life finds herself stranded in small-town North Carolina—with a brooding Highland hunk who’s straight out of ancient Scotland.

Ramsay MacDara wishes the goddesses had left his arse back in the tenth century. That way he never would have met the gold digger who made a fool out of him. A loner at heart, Ramsay is riding his beloved horse through the woods near his family’s North Carolina theme park, Highland Life and Legends, when he hears tires squealing—followed by a thud—and rushes to the scene to help. That’s when he sets his eyes on a pair of long legs sticking out of the moon roof of a car. His interest piqued, the rest of her will soon arouse his greatest desires . . . and deepest fears.

Archaeologist Katie Jenson is on a six-month sabbatical from her job at Princeton University. Following the death of her beloved father—whose dying request was for Katie to live life to the fullest—she’s headed to a friend’s beach house in North Carolina. But a momentary distraction takes her off the road and on the journey of her life . . . with a sex god in a kilt at her side. Ramsay’s passion is the stuff of legend—and it just may be Katie’s greatest discovery.

EXCERPT:

Damn. He’s right where he belongs.
The certainty hit her as soon as she saw him. Hit. Her. Hard. So hard, she caught her breath and froze in the archway opening into the great hall.
Ramsay stood on the dais at one end of the cavernous meeting room that sprawled the length and width of the keep. The great hall, as it was known by all, comprised the center core of the stronghold—and Ramsay now reigned supreme over it.
Formidable. Imposing. Arresting. All those adjectives fell short when it came to describing the mesmerizing man who had obviously not only found his element but totally embraced it.
He clutched his spear at his side like a king—no like a Greek god, like Zeus himself holding his scepter as he surveyed Olympus. A different breastplate from the one he’d worn earlier covered his chest. This one reminded Katie of the one Ramsay’s father had worn back at the altar. Highly    polished iron and brass pieces shaped into what she was certain were meaningful symbols were inset into the piece of thick leather armor that had been dyed black and oiled to a fine sheen that reflected the light from the torches and the candles.
Wide stance. Broad shoulders thrown back. Head held high. A heart-stopping leader overseeing all his subjects. When his piercing gaze landed on her, Katie swallowed hard and an involuntary shiver of damn rippled through her. This wasn’t Ramsay, the sweet, hesitant introvert of Brady, North Carolina. This man was Ramsay, the fearless warlord.
He smiled. A real smile that proudly shone from his eyes, then he held out his hand and waited.
A gentle but firm push nudged at the small of her back. “Go to him, m’lady,” Flora whispered from behind her. “Dinna fash, I’ll be a standin’ to the side of the pedestal if ye have need of the slightest thing.”
Oddly enough, the knowledge that the mere slip of a girl that she’d just met would be nearby did make her feel somewhat better.
Katie stepped into the room and the rumbling undertone of the multiple conversations evaporated, leaving behind a nerve-jarring silence. She swallowed hard and kept her focus locked on Ramsay as she made her way to the dais and took his hand.
“Yer breathtaking,” Ramsay said as he beamed at her with a look she’d never seen on any man’s face before. It was a shiver-inducing mixture of pride, adoration, and pure primal hunger. He steadied her as she navigated the pair of wide stone steps of the dais, assisting her struggle to keep her long skirts from grabbing her feet and throwing her to the ground.
He kept his gaze locked on her face as he met her on the middle step and pressed his mouth close to her ear right before she’d reached the top. “Truly breathtaking, dear one, and yer all mine.”

Just Wait For Me-a new book by author Dawn Marie Hamilton

I invited fellow author Dawn Marie Hamilton to stop by and share with my readers her latest book, Just Wait For Me, which she released on August 10, 2016.

The Book Blurb:

The third match in the Fae Queen's challenge is in play. Will fae magic change Stephen and Jillian's destiny?

In the chaotic aftermath of the battle of Flodden, an injured Highland warrior makes a vow to a twenty-first century lass cast back in time by a meddling, matchmaking faerie. Stephen MacEwen promises to find a way to send her forward to her own time. But is that an oath he'll want to keep after finding love in Jillian O'Donnell's arms? And after saving Stephen's life, will Jillian want to go?

No matter what the lover's decide, Stephen's wife--a woman who acquired the title through deceit--and an old enemy attempt to destroy the couple's chance for happiness. Only with the help of Fae allies can Stephen and Jillian overcome and earn their reward--everlasting love.

The Cave of the mysterious Gray Women was introduced in the first book of the Highland Gardens series and developed upon, with inspiration from Smoo Cave near the village of Durness in Scotland, in 'Just Wait For Me'. Here is an except at the Caves from Stephen's point-of-view shortly after Jillian traveled back in time to 1513 and wasn't yet aware of her exact whereabouts...

Of a sudden, Jillian jerked her feet up onto the shelf where she sat. Wrapping arms tightly around her legs, she stared into the water with a frown.
“What is wrong?” Stephen asked, sliding closer.
“Something brushed over my feet. Are their snakes in the water?”
Her horrified expression made him chuckle. “Nae. Just wee toothless fish.”
“Oh. Like the garra rufa that nibble away dead skin from your feet when you get a fish pedicure at one of the fancy spas in Asheville.”
“I dinnae ken about that, but the fish in this pool will not hurt you.”
She dropped her feet deeper into the water and smiled. “Tickles.”
“Aye. Does.” He sounded like the village idiot.
“I’m lost. The children told me the Gray Women would help me find my way to a phone or to a town where I could call my brother, but they keep disappearing. Do you know where I can go to make a call?”
“The women come and go. Mysteriously.”
    “Why are you here?”
    “To heal.”
    “What happened?”
    “Ach. ’Tis a long story.”
“You’re Scottish. Right? You sound a lot like my business partner’s husband, Patrick MacLachlan. He’s originally from Scotland.” She shook her head, making her braid bob. “Of course, you wouldn’t know him. Sorry. I tend to ramble when I’m nervous.”
“I dinnae wish to make you uncomfortable.” She kenned Patrick!
She smiled, and Stephen had to rub an achy spot near his heart. He didn’t ken whether it was because she affected him so or because she kenned Patrick. He missed his cousin terribly.
“So? About a phone?” she persisted.
“Phone? Is that something of your future time?”
Her eyes narrowed, brow furrowed. The look clearly stated she believed him simple in the head. He might strive to be underestimated by an opponent in battle, but he didn’t like the lass thinking poorly of him.

Happy Father's Day

Dad & me Father's Day 2016
Some people think Father's Day is a celebration of fathers, but it means different things to different people. At this writing, I am lucky my father is with us (he turned 91 years old at the beginning of this month).

Writers are naturally curious, so I did some research. The holiday was started in the United States in the early twentieth century. Although you might think it is the same as our Mother’s Day holiday, it is not as popular as Mother's Day. More research found that Father’s Day only became official in 1972. Mother’s Day started in 1914. I am not sure why it took so long to recognize dads…the real dads, whether biological or those who have taken in step kids or adopted children, but they all count.
I was out of the house by the time Father’s Day started back in '72, and I hope I did not ignore the concept. (Dad, did I send you a card at least?) I have always loved my dad, and appreciated him the best I could...well I did present him with two grandsons.

Don’t forget your father on Father’s Day.

1st Page: My Hunted Highlander by Nancy Lee Badger

CHAPTER 1

1603 Scotland
The North Sea

Niall Sinclair blinked, trying to open his eyes, but pain shot across his left brow and cheek. His vision was nothing more than a wavering fog, with pinpricks of bright light sending stabbing twinges shooting through his skull.
Disoriented, he struggled to clear his head and regain his sight. However, when he attempted to raise his right hand to feel the aching left side of his face, his arm would not obey his command. His hands were bound behind him. When he shook his head to clear the cobwebs, a searing pain tore through his temples. He stopped. In all his thirty years, even when the tip of a broadsword wounded him during battle and left its mark across his chest, he had never endured such pain.
A sudden wave of nausea had him swallowing bile. Pain erupted once more from his wrists to his neck. While he contemplated whether he had broken bones or dislocated a shoulder, a movement to his right made him as rigid as a Scottish standing stone. Until he knew if the movement was either friend or foe, his best option was to appear docile and unconscious.
“He be awake. Better fetch the capt’n.”
Too late.
The voice rumbled low and craggy, like an old hound coughing up a bone. Its owner came no closer. Niall threw his head back in an unwise attempt to see the owner, and slammed against something hard and unyielding. They had bound his hands around whatever stood behind him. From its circular shape, his first thought was a tree. However, the wood was smooth against his naked back and buttocks, and the gentle rolling of the hard surface beneath his feet suggested the mast of a ship. The stranger’s use of the word captain added to his conclusion, yet how could he have ended up on a ship?
Several other voices, along with the heavy stomping of boots, drew closer. A breath of cool air swept his damp hair across his face, and he could see little of his surroundings. When the same breeze made certain body parts shrink, he realized he was soaking wet, and naked.

Book Blurb

Plucked naked from the North Sea, bruised and nearly drowned, Niall Sinclair wakes bound to the mast of the pirate ship, The Black Thistle. Hiding his identity, and brutalized by the first mate and other seamen, their captain comes to his aid. Her identity, and gender, are a surprise, and his physical reaction to her makes him nearly forget his need to escape, and return to his clan.

When kidnapped from her shipbuilding business in modern day Portsmouth, New Hampshire, the last place Blair MacIan figured to end up, was at the helm of a pirate ship in 1603 Scotland. With her abusive husband dead, and the ship, the crew, and their people under her care, the last thing she needed was to fish a naked man from the sea. His ravaged face and ragged sandy hair could not detract from his magnificence, and she sensed in him, a means for her own escape.

Nancy Lee Badger Interviews Author Jennae Vale

Nancy- Author Jennae Vale dropped by to share intimate details about her life. Her  book, A Thistle Beyond Time  is Book 2 of The Thistle and Hive Series. It is a Time Travel Romance and was released on March 28, 2015. Please tell my readers a little bit about your book.

Jennae- This is the story of Jenna Sinclair and Cormac MacBayne.  Jenna lives in 21st century San Francisco and Cormac lives in 16th century Scotland.  With the help of a meddlesome, matchmaking witch, Cormac, who is seeking a wife, finds himself travelling through time to present day San Francisco where he meets and hopes to woo, Jenna.  She thinks he’s lost his mind and doesn’t believe his crazy story about being sent from the past by a witch.  But still there’s something about him that she finds irresistible.  Cormac’s plan to bring her back home with him is jeopardized by Jenna’s disbelief, her mistrust of men and her general prickly attitude. It’s obvious these two are meant to be together, but there are many obstacles to overcome and there are no guarantees

Nancy- Describe the genre of this particular title, and is the only genre you write in?

Jennae- The story of Jenna and Cormac is a time travel romance.  This is currently the only genre that I write in and that’s because I am having so much fun with it.  Time travel is one of those things that I’d love to do.  I’d love the opportunity to travel back in time and see a firsthand account of how people lived in the past.  In school, history was my favorite subject and I would find myself daydreaming about being a part of whatever time period we were studying.

Nancy- What is your writing routine like?

Jennae- My writing routine is anything but routine.  I tend to like to get any other errands or work that need tending done in the morning.  Then in the afternoon, after I’ve walked my dog and listened to my characters, I will sit down and write.  I might write pages and pages, or I might find that I need to do some research before I get started.  I am part pantser and part plotter.  I start off plotting and before I know it I’m flying by the seat of my pants.  If I get stuck, I will go back to plotting and fluctuate back and forth until I’m done.

Nancy- What sort of promo do you do? Do you have help?

Jennae- I do all my own promo work.  Lots of social media – Facebook and Twitter are my favorites.  I’ll usually do a blog tour.  I like to interact with my readers.  I find that’s the absolute best promotional work I can do.

Nancy- Having achieved your goal to be a published author, what is the most rewarding thing?

Jennae- The most rewarding thing about having self-published is that I actually did it.  I actually wrote an entire book and I put it out there for others to read and they seem to like it.  I really thought I might sell about 35 or 40 books to friends and relatives, so I was totally taken by surprise when I exceeded that number and people kept buying my book.  I am so grateful that I’ve had the opportunity to do this and I hope to continue writing more and more books every year.

Nancy- Are you a member of any writing organizations and, if so, have they helped

Jennae- I am a member of RWA, my local chapter – SVRWA, and online with CHRWA.  I have found it to be extremely helpful.  The other authors in the group have been so generous with their time and their advice.  It has meant so much to me.  Authors tend to be solitary creatures, spending lots of time alone writing, so any opportunity that arises to get out and meet with other people making the same journey is a true blessing.

Please Share three fun facts about you that most people don’t know.
1)I am a fabricholic.  I have a stash of fabrics that takes up an entire room.  I love to use it in quilts whenever I have the opportunity.
2)I am an amateur genealogist, searching out my own and my husband’s family history.
3)I love animals and have a dog, two cats, a horse and 4 chickens. I have a particular affection for birds, especially birds of prey.

Nancy- What’s next for you?

Jennae- I have three more books I’d like to self-publish this year.  Separated By Time - Book 3 of The Thistle & Hive Series, of course. I’m also writing A Thistle & Hive Christmas, and I have another time travel story up my sleeve that is not part of my series – A Highlander At The Albannach.

BOOK BLURB from A Thistle Beyond Time
Cormac MacBayne wants a wife and the witch, Edna Campbell, has the perfect woman in mind.  The only problem is they’re separated by five hundred years and thousands of miles.

Fresh from a bad marriage, Jenna Sinclair has sworn off men – that is until a handsome highlander comes out of the fog and into her life.  He’s a mystery and possibly part of an elaborate practical joke concocted by her cousin.  Jenna’s had enough deception in her life.  Can she risk everything to be with a man who is so obviously lying to her?

EXCERPT
Jenna was running the vacuum cleaner when Dylan returned with Cormac. She didn’t
hear them enter and when she finally did look up, she jumped, clutching her chest.
“You scared me!” Her heart was racing in her chest.
“Sorry, cuz,” Dylan apologized, with a sheepish grin on his face.
Jenna looked around Dylan and an angry scowl lit across her features as she spied
Cormac.
“I thought I told you to take him to a shelter! What didn’t you understand about
that?” She snapped.
“I couldn’t do that to him, Jenna. He’s from another country and he doesn’t know
anyone here. He’s a good guy, really. We just spent the last hour having breakfast and
getting to know each other.”
“Dylan, I know what you’re up to, so you can stop right now.” Letting go of the
vacuum, Jenna crossed her arms over her chest.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Dylan replied.
“I know this is all a practical joke. I don’t know how you pulled it off and I don’t
know where you got this guy from, but I can’t believe you would do that to me. You
know how upset I’ve been lately and when he appeared out of nowhere, well… I thought
he was a serial killer or something.”
“I would never harm ye, lass.” Cormac said, as he peeked around from behind
Dylan.
“I know that now, but at the time I was pretty scared.”
“I apologize to ye. I didnae mean to scare ye.”
“It wasn’t a practical joke, Jenna. This guy, Cormac, is from Scotland and he was
sent here by a witch. That’s the Edna he mentioned. Anyway, he’s not even from this
time. He’s from the sixteenth century. Can you believe it?” Dylan asked excitedly.
“No. I can’t believe it and I don’t. Nice work trying to convince me of something
completely impossible. Have you been taking acting classes lately, Dylan, ‘cause you’re
pretty good. If I didn’t know you better, I might even believe you.”
“It’s true, Jenna. I’m not making it up. Tell her Cormac.”“He’s telling the truth, lass. Edna sent me from the year 1514. She said ye were to be me wife.”
“Now don’t start that again. You both need to give it up. I don’t believe you. There’s no such thing as time travel. Period. The end.”
“Okay. I won’t mention it again, but we’re not lying and time travel is totally
possible, you’ll see,” Dylan insisted.
