Oatmeal Cookies and a book from Nancy Lee Badger

Spring has sprung and my front yard is alive with all sorts of flowers that came with the place. We have lived here since I retired from my job as a 911 Dispatcher for the State of New Hampshire back in 2007 and bought this house in Raleigh, North Carolina in June 2008. We only have a few tulips and they are here one day and gone the next, but they do promise us a colorful spring. .Since the tulips have done their 'raisin' for 2021, here is a favorite sweet treat.

Nancy's Oatmeal-Raisin Cookies

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and place parchment paper on cookie sheets for easy clean-up (I am all about the easy part!)

1 1/2 Cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 Cup white sugar (I used Splenda)

1 Cup packed light brown sugar

1 Cup shortening (such as Crisco)

1 teaspoon vanilla

2 eggs

2 Cups old-fashion rolled oats

1/2 to 1 Cup raisins (sometimes I change it up and add semi-sweet morsels instead of raisins)

In a bowl combine flour, salt, and baking soda. Set aside. In mixer cream together both sugars and the shortening and vanilla. Once mixed, add eggs one at a time and beat until light and fluffy. Gradually beat in flour mixture and then add the rolled oats. Scrap the bowl. Add the raisins by hand until well incorporated.

Drop by a well-rounded spoonful onto the cookie sheets, spaced at least two inches apart. Bake 8 to 10 minutes until light brown. Remove from oven and let sit until partially cooled, then place on rack to fully cool. Makes about two-dozen to three-dozen depending on size. .

(My thanks to son Rob & his hubby Joe for the mug)

These cookies are delicious and go well with a big glass of milk, too. Making food from scratch with no preservatives is a healthy alternative to store-bought cookies. The raisins are a good fruit, too. Entertainment during this pandemic is also healthy to a person's well-being so remember to

Nancy Lee Badger Presents Author Joanne Guidoccio

Joanne Guidoccio stopped by to share something exciting: she has reached out to readers during this pandemic and is spotlighted her Mediterranean Trilogy by offering a sale price on two ebooks. Take it away, Joanne!

Thanks, Nancy! In the Mediterranean Trilogy, which is paranormal romance released by Soul Mate Publishing, I feature the mermaids of the Bella tribe. In Book 1, Between Land and Sea, I follow Isabella on the road to reinvention. Having been brutally transformed into an overweight, middle-aged woman, Isabella struggles to reinvent herself as Barbara Davies.
After writing Between Land and Sea, I started to imagine more books involving the mermaids and ex-mermaids in the protagonist’s life. One night I dreamed of another mermaid, one not as kind and supportive as the characters in the first novel. The following day, a series of What if scenarios emerged: What if the new mermaid was somewhere on the Narcissist/Sociopath continuum? And what if she was determined to wreak havoc in everyone’s life?
In Book 2, The Coming of Arabella, Isabella/Barbara’s life is disrupted by the unexpected arrival of her beautifully preserved twin sister, Arabella.

Ideas are percolating for Book 3 – The Making of a Mermaid Psychic.

Inspirational Quotes from Between Land and Sea

“Your path will diverge for a while, but do not let that worry you. You have known difficulty before, but you will survive and thrive.”
“You must take responsibility for your own life and make full use of your gifts.”
“Your life has turned out the way it has for a reason. And now, you need to unearth that purpose and use it for your own good and the greater good.”
“You should be ready to take advantage of all opportunities that arise. Accept every invitation. Follow each whim. Some will work out, others won’t. But don’t give up.”
“Whatever you decide to keep hidden could implode later…with disastrous results.”

Inspirational Quotes from The Coming of Arabella

“Life is good, and I intend to enjoy all the abundance the universe sees fit to send my way.”
“The only magic that exists is the magic you create for yourself.”
“You are in the present season for a reason. It is your job to figure out why.”
“Set the intention and let the universe figure out the how.”
“No one, absolutely no one, can ruin your life unless you give that person the key to your inner soul.”
These ebooks will be on sale for
$0.99 (US)
March 29 to April 4
Blurb – Between Land and Sea
After giving up her tail for an international banker, Isabella of the Mediterranean kingdom is aged, weathered, and abandoned on the fog-drenched shores of southwest England. She faces her human journey as a plain and practically destitute fifty-three-year-old woman.

With the help of a magic tablet and online mermaid support, she reinvents herself as a career counselor, motivational speaker, and writer of self-help books. Along the way, she encounters a cast of unforgettable characters, among them former mermaids, supportive and not-so-supportive women, deserving and undeserving men, and several New Agers. As Isabella evolves into Barbara Davies, she embraces her middle-aged body, heals her bruised heart, and learns to love again.

This contemporary version of The Little Mermaid offers hope and inspiration to anyone who has been dumped, deceived, or demoted. It will also appeal to mermaid enthusiasts.

Blurb – The Coming of Arabella
On the day of her engagement party, an ex-mermaid’s life is disrupted by the unexpected arrival of another mermaid—a sister she has never known. Under normal circumstances, Barbara Davies would be overjoyed, but her special day is already wrought with tension. While Barbara is not the first mermaid from the Mediterranean kingdom to settle in small town Ontario, she has yet to reveal her origins to her fiancĂ©. So, when Arabella, the gorgeous sister whose disturbing black eyes banished her to the island of Crete, saunters into her life, clutching the arm of Barbara’s discarded lover, a powder keg of emotion is released.

Relationships falter and careers stall as envy stirs in the hearts of the sisters. On the verge of meltdown after her fiancé leaves Canada for a teaching job in Vermont, Barbara flees to Arizona hoping for a reprieve. There, she finds solace at a retreat for ex-mermaids and a second chance at love with a charismatic preacher. As she contemplates a new life in the desert paradise of Sedona, shocking secrets emerge and tragedy strikes. A stronger and wiser Barbara rises up to face these new challenges and embrace the best parts of her mermaid heritage.

Whirling through Wilson NC with Nancy Lee Badger

Hubby posing in the Whirligig Park
One bright, hot, July day, I dragged hubby to the car and yelled 'Road Trip'! I have been trying for months to find a day to play hookey and draw myself out of the business of writing to enjoy a drive to visit... Whirligigs.

Our local art museum, where my latest paranormal book series is based, has a hand-built wind-powered colorful sculpture made by artist, Vollis Simpson, who is from the town of Wilson, North Carolina. It is about an hour's drive east of Raleigh.

While waiting at RDU airport one day, I picked up a brochure about Wilson and brought it home. The photos and descriptions of the town and restaurants intrigued me, but the photo of an actual park dedicated to the artist and filled with his work made me want to see it.

Only after we arrived did we find out that they hold a farmer's market every Wednesday and Saturday along one side of the park under an open-sided pavillion. This was great! Here we were on a very hot Wednesday to check out art, had a place to keep pit of the sun, and we went home with fresh veggies!

Wilson Farmer's Market
The sun beat down brutally so I knew we couldn't stay too long. I took photos and we climbed on the covered stage overlooking a grassy field for a little more shade. Seems the park also hosts music nights and people sit on the grass or bring chairs. I heard there was a museum dedicated to Vollis Simpson in the works, so we have another reason to return to visit the Whirligig Park in Wilson, NC.

In the meantime, I await the edits from my publisher concerning the 3rd book in my Warriors in Bronze series. It is also set at the fictional Raleigh Museum of Art (based on the NC Museum of Art) to follow Heaven-sent Warrior and Heaven-sent Highlander. Try them!

Nancy Lee Badger Presents Author Jeanne Oates Estridge

Since I happen to LOVE demons and enjoy writing about them, I invited Jeanne to stop by and share her brand new book.Take it away!

Book Blurb:
After beating Satan at poker, demon Belial takes on a new bet: If he can get God’s champion to curse God, within the agreed timeframe, Hell gains another soul and Belial earns a promotion to chief demon.
The demon always wins, but this time the deck may be stacked against him. Widowed nurse Dara Strong, the granddaughter of famous demon fighters, has no problem recognizing Belial, so when he appears in her clinic in doctor’s disguise, she kicks him out.

Jeanne Oates Estridge wrote her first short story in third grade, a tale of birth-control-challenged bunnies who named their children in alphabetical order—Alice, Benjamin, Cathy, Dexter—all the way down to baby Zachary. Later that year, when given an assignment to depict what she wanted to be when she grew up, Jeanne drew herself in a floor-length, crayon-blue dress, sitting at a typewriter. Life has a way of handing us detours, though, and Jeanne wound up earning her degree, and her living, as a computer analyst. She continued to write at night and on weekends, but she could never quite manage to write anything that satisfied her. But she didn’t give up. In 2012, she returned to college to earn a Master’s Certificate in Creative Writing at the Nora Roberts’ School of Romance Writing at McDaniel College. Working under the mentorship of NYT Bestseller and former high school English teacher Jenny Crusie, Jeanne wrote a novel that went on to win the 2015 RWA® Golden Heart® for Paranormal. The Demon Always Wins, the first book of her Touched by a Demon trilogy, is now available on Amazon. Nancy Lee Badger Presents Author Susan Hanniford Crowley

I invited a fellow Soul Mate Publishing author to stop by and share her latest book. Take it away, Susan!

Thank you, Nancy Lee, for having me over on your blog. Writing Vampire Princess of New York was a huge adventure for me.

Noblesse is the daughter of Vampire King of New York Maximillion Vander Meer. You would think she’d be a woman, er.. vampiress that has everything. Well, it’s just not true. Whenever her father is away, she’s in charge of the vampires of New York as well as VMeer Industries, a worldwide conglomerate of corporations he started. Highly educated, Noblesse is very talented business-wise but also very clever and sweet when it comes to those she loves or protects.

In the nearly 200 years, that Noblesse has been a vampire, she has not found a true love. She is also haunted by the fact that she never found her human mother who disappeared during the French Revolution.

Here’s an Excerpt!

Noblesse stayed within Donovan’s arms and reveled in his warmth. When she was sure he had fallen asleep again, she examined the wound Mina sewed. The King’s Elixir had nullified the poison, but the seam looked angry and red. Noblesse moved to lick that awful wound. The instant her tongue touched Donovan’s skin, he moaned in his sleep. She smiled. The man really didn’t like being licked. Still she continued licking the ragged edge until it looked less irritated.
Mina would take the stitches out in the morning. Noblesse figured he’d be healed by then. The guilt over his injury gnawed at her. If he wasn’t in her bedroom, he wouldn’t have gotten hurt. Donovan was her best friend, and she loved him.
Satisfied that he was rapidly on the mend, she moved back into place under his arm.
Thank you, Sha, he said to her mind.
You are supposed to be asleep.
How could I sleep through that? Normally I hate being licked. But you made it different, even enjoyable.
His baritone chuckle made her laugh. Then he pulled her close to him and kissed her. His kiss dissolved into slumber.
The next morning, Donovan sat up and pulled out his IV. The Arnhem Knights seated on chairs by the door, immediately stood up.
“You can’t do that.”
“Why?”
“Only the doctor can.”
Noblesse, still wearing the kaftan dress she fell asleep in, hurried around to the IV side. Searching for bandages, she found them and wrapped them tightly to stop his bleeding.
Next he reached for his clothes on the nearby chair. He pulled on his jeans and zipped just as Mina walked through the door.
“Donovan, what are you doing?”
“I’m better, Doc.” He pulled on his shirt and socks and shoes. “I’m going out to eat, and Noblesse is going with me.” He grabbed her hand and left the room.
“Really, Donovan, I must stop by my room and change clothes.”
“Okay.”
When they approached the door to her apartment, it was guarded by Arnhem Knights. “No one is allowed in.”
Noblesse stared at them. “Well, I’m an Arnhem Knight too. Step aside.”
Hatcher stood in her way. “Noblesse, I’m sorry, but Dr. Lucente says he’s still testing the place.”
“Hatcher, they shouldn’t have you pulling double duty.”
“I don’t mind. I promised Max I’d keep an eye on you.”
Leaning past Hatcher, she knocked on the door. Syd opened it a smidge. “Noblesse, I’m not done.”
“I need my purse, please.”
He closed the door and a moment later handed it out to her through the small opening.
“Thank—.” The door shut before she managed to get out the second word.
“What’s the plan, Noble?” Donovan zipped his leather jacket halfway up.
“First we’re going to go eat, and then I’ll stop by my office. I always keep spare clothes there.”
Donovan took her hand and they headed for the lobby. Curtis, the doorman, stood in their way.
“David said not to let anyone in or out.”
Noblesse frowned.
“What’s the problem, Curtis?” David walked up to them.
“Pardon me, sir, but your sister and Donovan Dupre want to leave.”
David was accompanied by several of the Arnhem Knights. “Noblesse and Donovan, we are still investigating what happened. You are to ease yourselves out without letting anyone in. Got it?”

HEAVEN-SENT WARRIOR - A New Release!

Heaven-sent Warrior, my 24th book, was just released by Soul Mate Publishing and I am proud to say the entire story takes place in the beautiful state of North Carolina.

Book Blurb
HenrĂ Chevalier's last memory, before stumbling naked into a museum’s moonlit garden, was Auguste Rodin and his dusty Paris studio in 1886. To escape his broken heart, HenrĂ volunteered to sleep inside a statue until needed. Expecting to die, he discovers he must learn to use the unexpected powers Heaven has given him. Without them he will fail his mission against otherworldly creatures, such as demons and faeries.

Kenzie Mackintosh, a dedicated art museum's curator, spies a naked man hiding among bronze statues. A quick glance ignites desire within her, but she is too tied-up in work to act on it. Unaware of her Fae heritage, their relationship heats up as he disrupts her job. While HenrĂ tries to process modern buildings, cars, and a broken elevator, a demon attacks and forces HenrĂ and Kenzie to enlist the aid of her powerful Fae relatives. When the demon possesses the body of her ex-lover and threatens to kill him, then use her to take over the world, HenrĂ and Kenzie must learn to trust each other, even if Kenzie’s death might be the only answer to the world’s salvation.

The story begins in the Rodin Garden

Nancy Lee Badger Presents Belle Ami

Belle Ami, who stopped by to share her new release, hooked me with the title and gorgeous cover. Take it away, Belle Ami!
Will her visions lead her to the truth?
I'm so excited to tell you about my new release, The Girl Who Knew da Vinci, which was released June 1st. It's a romantic suspense thriller with a supernatural twist. It's also the first book in my new OUT OF TIME Thriller Series.

BLURB:
Art historian Angela Renatus is haunted by dreams of Leonardo da Vinci and a mysterious painting of Giuliano Medici and his mistress Fioretta Gorini. A painting that, as far as the world knows, doesn't exist. Compelled by her visions, Angela is determined to find out the truth.
When Angela is contacted by art detective Alex Caine, she's shocked to learn that he too is seeking the same painting. Alex's client, a wealthy German financier, is determined to clear the name of his late uncle, Gerard Jaeger, an art historian, who went missing in Florence, during World War II. In letters written before his disappearance, the historian describes his love affair with a beautiful young Italian woman named Sophia Caro, and the discovery of an extraordinary painting by the great master himself-a painting depicting Giuliano and Fioretta.
Angela and Alex journey to Florence in search of the priceless treasure. Is it a lost da Vinci, potentially worth hundreds of millions of dollars, or a wild goose-chase that will only lead to a dead end? But someone else is searching for the elusive painting-Alberto Scordato is a powerful man in the art world and a sociopath who will stop at nothing to get what he wants, even murder. Scordato knows something about Angela that even she doesn't know, something that could threaten both Angela and Alex's lives, forcing them into the crosshairs of fate.

Excerpt from The Girl Who Knew da Vinci

Florence, Italy
Uffizi Gallery
August 3, 1944

Sophia Caro was scared, but not half as scared as she should be. The world was at war and she was in love with a German officer. She covered her ears as another explosion rocked the building, pressing closer into the arms of her lover, Gerhard Jaeger. Had it only been a few hours? It felt like the Germans had been bombing for days.
“Florence will never be the same,” she whispered brokenly. After each detonation, the Uffizi Gallery strained and shuddered as if struck by an earthquake.
Gerhard held her tighter, shielding her with his body. “It will my darling, you’ll see.”
They planned to escape from Florence. Gerhard, who was no Nazi, would desert. If captured he’d be lined up before a firing squad. Adding to her worries were her brothers who were partisans fighting the Nazis. She and Gerhard were set to flee back home to her family vineyard in the Tuscan hills. She’d be lucky if her brothers didn’t shoot Gerhard first and ask questions later. Time had run out and the man she loved with her heart and soul was prepared to risk everything for her and their unborn child.
Another round of blasts shook the building. Huddling in the long central gallery of the Uffizi, dust and pieces of the frescoed ceiling rained down around them.
“The ceiling! What if the building collapses?” Sophia couldn’t control the panic that seized her. Blistering heat and falling debris made it impossible to breathe.
“We’ll be fine Sophia. The Uffizi has stood for nearly five hundred years. It will stand for another five hundred, I’m sure.” Gerhard kissed her forehead. “Longer than that bastard Hitler. It makes me ashamed and sick to be a German.”
Sophia lay her hand against his cheek. “You’re an academic, an art historian, not a soldier. You’d do anything to protect Florence’s art treasures. It’s one of the reasons I fell in love with you.”
“Have I done enough?” Deep lines etched his face.
A massive blast brought another shower of plaster, covering them in a fine veil of white dust.
“Heaven help us. When will it stop?” Sophia buried her face in his chest.
“It won’t stop until the bridges are demolished. Even for the industrious Germans that could take most of the night.”
Sophia covered her ears to muffle another round of successive blasts. “In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.” She crossed herself, wondering if God would listen to the pleas of a now-and-again Catholic. She felt a trickle of sweat roll down her cheek. Gerhard pulled his handkerchief from his pocket and wiped it away.
Amore mio, I promise you it will end by dawn. My contact, Deiter, assured me that the Ponte Vecchio will not be destroyed. When they’ve finished bringing down the rest of the bridges the explosions will cease. Then you and I will leave this nightmare of a war behind.”
A series of booms echoed again through the city and the reality of their situation returned. She held her stomach, protecting the small bump that protruded.
He covered her hand with his. “I hope you packed something substantial for our journey, my love. You need to keep up your strength for our child’s sake. Besides which,” he said, “I’d hate to be arrested for a grumbling stomach.”
“This is Italy,” she said with a quirk of her lips. “We aren’t going to die of starvation.” She looked around. “What have you done with the painting?”
“I had to cut it from its frame,” he said with a grimace. “I wrapped it in tissue paper and rolled it paint side out. Then I rolled it in lamb’s wool and fit it in a thick cardboard tube. I think it should be safe from the elements. My backpack is waterproof.”
She knew he’d do anything to keep her and their unborn child safe, but the painting worried her. It seemed to her an unnecessary risk to take a painting from the Uffizi, even if he meant only to keep it safe. It was a bone of contention between them.
“It’s twenty-seven kilometers south of Florence to my family’s vineyard in Montefioralle. I’m afraid much of it is uphill.”
“We’re young and strong, Sophia. If I have to carry you up a mountain, I will. It should take us about six hours to walk twenty-seven kilometers; we can manage that. Didn’t you say the area is famous for its Chianti?”
“The best Chianti and the most beautiful village in Italy. You will never want to leave.”
“Sounds like a good place to wait out the war, a glass of wine in hand, a bambino on my lap, and a goddess in my bed. The perfect place for us to begin our new life.” He drew her close and caressed her abdomen.
It seemed impossible that amid the chaos of war their child had been conceived. She hadn’t meant it to happen and feared he’d think she’d entrapped him. But when she told him, he was overjoyed, professing his excitement to be a father. She knew, then, that his love for her was true.
Sometime after dawn, the explosions ceased and the Uffizi Gallery grew quiet. Gerhard had kept his military uniform on until the last second. But now the die had been cast and it was time to escape. He discarded his uniform and donned the clothes of a civilian. Sophia straightened his collar while he stuffed the fake identity papers into his pocket.
“Well, Giorgio Bandini, accountant from Pisa, are you ready to begin the next phase of your life?”
He grabbed her around the waist and kissed her. “So long as I’m allowed to make love every night to the most desirable woman in the world. Shall we go, angelo mio.”
Sophia knew the Vasari Corridor like the back of her hand. If need be, she could walk it blindfolded. The concealed passageway above the bridge would be their escape route. She gave silent thanks to the clever Duke Cosimo I de’Medici who, in 1565, had ordered Giorgio Vasari to build the secret corridor. It allowed the Medici family to travel from the Palazzo Vecchio to the Palazzo Pitti in safety and privacy. During the five years Sophia had worked at the Uffizi, instead of walking the crowded Ponte Vecchio below, she’d chosen to walk the three-quarter mile from the Uffizi to the Pitti in privacy, just as the Medici family had.
Holding a candle for her, Gerhard followed her through the unmarked secret door near the Botticelli room and down a flight of stairs. She unlocked another door and, after he passed through it, she locked it behind her. The minute the door shut, it was as if the air changed. The eerie silence was disconcerting after the hours of continuous bombings.
“Don’t worry, it always feels like you’ve entered another world,” she said.
“Cooler. I’ll take it.” He shifted the heavy backpack to his other shoulder.
Taking his hand, she led him through the twists and turns of the corridor. “Before the war these walls were hung with Medici portraits. Now they’re hidden in storage vaults. The war has altered the world forever.”
“Not forever, amore mio."
