Excerpt from Wildfire and Roses

An opening in the trees revealed thickets growing beside a creek with green algae coating the rocks. The afternoon heat working in tandem with the heavy downpour gave way to sweltering humidity. She removed her rain and sweat-soaked shirt in favor of the cooler camisole underneath. Although she had packed a light waterproof jacket, the storm came without warning. The almost horizontal, wind-driven rain swept the ridge, plastering her hair to her head. Drenched, their clothes clung to their bodies. It was impossible not to notice Will’s ripped torso underneath his wet shirt. Stop looking at his body. She observed his stolen glance at her assets when she took off the outer layer. To rid her mind of those thoughts, she shook her head and turned her attention back to the task. She agonized about the frightened little boy, knowing the first twenty-four hours were the most critical. Would he survive the night if they didn’t locate him soon? A sense of unease gnawed at her.

At the same moment she turned toward Ranger Walsh to ask what they would do if they didn’t find him before dark, thunder roared through the forest making her words inaudible. The crunch of twigs and leaves beneath their feet turned into splashes as the rain persisted. They slogged through ankle-deep mud, around jutting rocks, and over blown-down trunks and branches. The wind whipped, and the downpour continued, slowing their progress.

The trail narrowed with sharp drop-offs on the left side. Walking in a single line, Ranger Walsh led, Will followed him, and she took the rear position. In a fraction of a second, she recognized what was happening ahead. Seized by fear, she cried out as Will stepped in a pool of mud, lost his footing, and tumbled down the side of a cliff.

AJ's Wish by Renée Filippucci-Kotz

I met author Renée Filippucci-Kotz at a meeting of my local writer's group, the  Triangle Association of Freelancers. When I heard that she had recently published her first book, I wanted to learn more.

Take it away, Renée!

I wanted to write books for children since working with foster children in the late 1980’s. In addition, I am a long-time volunteer for the Wake County Animal Center. Cassandra, the inspiration for AJ’s Wish joined my family in 2009.

Book Blurb:

AJ loves animals.  She enjoys playing with her grandma’s pets and the pets of her friends, but her greatest wish is to have a pet of her own.  After AJ and her family watch a TV program about homeless animals in shelters, AJ asks her parents for a pet.  When they say no, AJ sets out to prove she is responsible enough to care for an animal.

Note: This bird rescue excerpt from the book actually happened when Ms. Filippucci-Kotz was five years old.

Excerpt:

           AJ loved to visit her grandma’s farm. There were two cats on the farm who would not go near anyone—no one, that is, except AJ. AJ fed them, and they trusted her. They even let her pet them. AJ named one Blackie because he was black and the other Graybe because she was gray. One morning, AJ heard a bird screeching. She ran outside and found a bird between Graybe’s paws. Without thinking, AJ reached down and plucked the bird free.

“Naughty kitty!” said AJ as Graybe meowed and ran under a bush. The bird didn’t wait a second and flew away into a nearby tree.

What is next for you, Renée?

I plan to write a series of books about Amelia Jae, more commonly known as AJ. Pepper’s Misadventure is soon to be the second book in the series.

 

More about the Author:

Renée Filippucci-Kotz has loved books since she was a child. Going to the library with her parents and brother was a favorite pastime. Renée has been telling stories to children since she began babysitting around age eleven. AJ's Wish is her first children's chapter book. 

Growing up Renée and her family had a variety of animals including gold fish, dogs, turtles, a cat, and a rabbit. In 2001 she began to volunteer at her local animal shelter, the Wake County Animal Center.  Renée currently produces videos of their pets in foster homes and takes photographs of animals in the Center for their web page.  She also produces videos for various rescue organization to help with their adoption of animals into permanent homes.

Ms. Filippucci-Kotz lives in North Carolina with her husband, Art, two dogs and a cat named Cassie, the inspiration for AJ’s Wish.

Nancy Lee Badger Interviews Molly Ann Wishlade

Debut author Molly Ann Wishlade stopped by all the way from her home near Cardiff, Wales! She answers a few personal questions. Desire in Deadwood is a historical western and is currently available for Total-E-Bound VIPs to buy and read but will be on general release on 30th August.

Now that I have taken my eyes off your book's cover, tell my readers a little bit about your book.  Desire in Deadwood is the story of Nate Hamilton and Evelyn Campbell who meet up in Deadwood after more than a decade of separation.

When did you start writing toward publication?  I always dreamt of being a published writer but I thought that it was one of those things that happens for others, not people like me. So, following University, I became a teacher then had two beautiful children. I was so busy being a mother and working that I didn’t have much time to think about being creative.
However, as my children got older, I felt that yearning to write building again. Only this time, it was stronger. I took a career break and tried writing a medical romance. I read lots of romances, plotted a story then wrote the first three chapters and a synopsis.
I submitted my manuscript to a major romance publisher then waited. I should have been finishing it then starting the next one but I didn’t. I procrastinated. A lot! When the rejection finally came, I wasn’t surprised. It just wasn’t the right time for me, I guess. Instead of having another go, I got myself another full time job at a different school and packed away my dream of writing, thinking I didn’t really have it in me.

However, a few years ago, when I met my husband and told him all about my dreams, something clicked. He really believed that I could do this and he encouraged me to go for it. His confidence boosted my own and inspired me to try again. He’s such a strong and determined man that with his support and faith in me, I felt more confidence in my ability than ever before.

I wrote, plotted, and submitted. There were rejections but they weren’t heartbreakingly negative. I even had several ‘revise and resubmits’ which gave me hope and encouraged me to persevere. My lowest point came just before Christmas last year when a Regency I’d submitted was rejected. I felt like throwing in the towel once again. Guess what? I didn’t. A dear friend of mine did a thorough critique of it and told me what the issues were but also what she loved about it. It was a steep but invaluable learning curve and it increased my determination. For Christmas last year my husband bought me a cover for my Kindle. It’s designed to look like a Victorian book cover and it has my name inscribed on the spine. On the inside front cover is a message which reads: This is your first book cover of many. You will be published! With support and encouragement like that, how could I fail to keep going?
Post-Christmas, a few lines just popped into my head and kept playing over and over:
“Take your clothes off.”
“What?”
“You heard me.”
Evelyn forced her mouth shut.
“So? What are you waiting for?”
Her eyes met those of the man on the moth eaten chaise longue in front of her. He was serious.

Within days, these evolved into a full plot and Desire in Deadwood was born! I submitted it to Total-E-Bound exclusively. And that, as they say, was that! 
Wow! So glad you kept at it, and had someone at your back! What is your writing routine like? As I teach fulltime, I try to write for at least an hour or two in the evenings - if I’m not too exhausted and as long as I don’t have piles of marking to do! I also grab time on the weekends. It’s difficult. I also want to spend time with my family. As my husband also teaches, we want to make the most of our time off. I am very lucky as he’s extremely understanding and he knows that when the writing bug bites and I’ve got something in my head, that I just have to get my laptop out and go for it! 
Having achieved your goal to be a published author, what is the most rewarding thing? Finishing my final edits and realizing that I was actually going to be published was amazing as was receiving my cover package from the wonderful Total-E-Bound team. I just get such a thrill seeing the book on the web and knowing that I wrote it. I don’t think that euphoria will ever go away.
Enjoy it, as you will your next book! Will you share some encouraging words for authors still struggling for that first contract? Never surrender your dreams. If you really want this – and you have to really want it or you won’t make it happen – then keep trying. You need to read lots, write lots and find some good critique partners, as well as a lovely editor who believes in your work. Don’t waste time procrastinating.
Please Share three fun facts about you that most people don’t know.
1)When I was eight, I had a pet mouse called Geronimo. When he died I was devastated so I buried him in a pretty little box with a clear plastic front cover. (It had previously held a letter writing set.)  Enclosed with him in the box was a note which read: Here lieth Geronimo, loveth by all. My Dad teased me about it for years!
2)I am obsessed with all things Tudor and will read just about anything I can get my hands on and even though I’ve read Anne Boleyn’s story time after time, it still fascinates me. I intend to write her story myself in the very near future…with a slightly new take on things. (Watch this space!) My husband recently took me to Hever Castle for my birthday and I cried all the way around the castle and gardens.
3)I have four bearded dragons. We wanted pets but because we work full time, we couldn’t have a dog. So we looked into it and decided that reptiles would be an alternative. They are bright, inquisitive and friendly creatures which enjoy interacting with the family.

All I have is a cat, but he is great company for my husband and I. What’s next for you?
I have just submitted my novel Harlot at the Homestead to Total-E-Bound and so I’m currently going through submission anxiety!  I guess I’d better get on with the next one to make the time pass more quickly.

EXCERPT
       Evelyn stood at her window in the Grand Central Hotel, looking out onto the street below. Dusk had fallen on the camp and the residents had lit their kerosene lamps which hung from their hooks like dead men in the breathless evening. By twilight, the camp seemed calm and even pretty with its gentle lighting and the dark shapes of the mountains as its backdrop. Maybe it was because she’d felt rootless for so long, or maybe it was because Nate was here, but Evelyn felt that she could settle in Deadwood; make it her home. Growing up she’d believed that her home would always be with Nate and she wished that she could believe that again, even if just for a moment. To have that security, that infallible awareness that she was with the man that destiny had chosen for her would still the pain in her heart and mind.
       She shrugged the thoughts away. No use crying over spilt milk. Nothing to gain from it. What was done was done and she had to pin her bloomers to her corset and get on with it, as her granny used to say.
       The main street teemed with people as miners returned to their lodgings to wash before supper; prospectors trudged heavily along the dry, potholed track to fall into a restless slumber filled with images of the gold pocket they’d find the next day and a few painted whores sidled up to passers-by to try to entice them into their establishments for whisky, gambling and a hot lay.
       She moved behind the curtain when Nate appeared, his long strides bringing him quickly in front of the hotel. He stopped as a man waved at him then joined him in the street. She thought she recognised the other man as the sheriff but she couldn’t be sure.
       “Mama?”
       Evelyn turned to her son.
       “Yes Aaron.”
       “Can I go downstairs?”
       She shook her head. “You know we talked about this.” Even though he was ten years old and tall for his age, she still fretted constantly for his safety.
       “But I’ll be careful. I just want to take a look around, see if …”
        His cheeks coloured.
       “You want to see if you can charm a cake off the cook, don’t you?”
       He looked down.
       “Well go on but don’t disappear. I’ll be down for dinner soon as I’ve changed.”
       Shaking her head, she watched as he grabbed his hat and ran to the door then turned and gave her a cheeky smile.
       She laughed and waved her hand. “Go on…before I change my mind!”
       As the door closed behind him, she turned back to the window, pressing her finger tips against the cool pane of glass. Nate was still deep in conversation with the other man.
       She was finding it hard to believe that she had come here to Deadwood and bumped into him after all this time. She had spent years thinking about him, dreaming about him and wanting him. But now that she’d been with him again, it wasn’t at all how she had imagined; he seemed like a stranger.
       His face was still handsome, his eyes still dark brown, but they were hard now and his forehead was lined as if he’d spent too long frowning in the sun.
       And he was angry with her. Still. She couldn’t blame him but she wished that she could go back in time and change things; stop herself walking into marriage to another man.
       But that was impossible.
       Her stomach rolled over as she thought of his final words to her that afternoon.
       “I’ll see you at the same time tomorrow.”
       She needed the money to support her and Aaron. She had no other means of keeping a roof over their heads. Her pride and conscience had seen to that.
       That was why she’d have to go. So why did the thought of seeing him again make her tingle all over?
MORE ABOUT THE AUTHOR
I have always been an avid reader and writer of stories. My lifetime of reading has taken me from the magical worlds of The Faraway Tree and The Borrowers, to the Greek myths and legends, to the Sweet Valley High Twins and Judy Blume’s Forever, to Asimov’s science fiction and Jane Eyre’s torment and to Stephen King’s masterpieces. More recently I have wandered through the vivid historicals of Philippa Gregory; the bubbly, gritty delights of Adele Parks and the fast paced thrillers of James Patterson. I love getting lost in a novel and often regret finishing one as the characters are usually missed.

I also indulge my insatiable hunger for romance and passion in the delicious worlds created by romantic novelists and having published one and with another in submission, I’m about to begin the next one!

I adore spending time with my family, taking long walks (although I’m still waiting for the rescue greyhound to accompany me), cooking my own secret recipe curries, drinking Earl Grey (in copious amounts) and discovering delicious wines. Oh, and I love to ski and can’t wait to go again!

Nancy Lee Badger Interviews Summer Kinard

Summer Kinard stopped in to answer a few personal questions and share her book, Can’t Buy Me Love. It is a contemporary romance and was released on June 7, 2013.

Please tell my readers a little bit about your book.  

I have advertised the book as “Romance Gone Green,” because it has a very environmentalist worldview. I think its claim to fame may be that it’s the only romance where tacos save the day!

Vanessa, the heroine, is a freegan whose dumpster exploration puts her face to face with a gorgeous Latino man, Javier. Her zany friends help her meet him in real life at the brewery where she tends bar. They have an intense romance that looks to be shaping up for the long run, when Vanessa is publicly humiliated and loses Javier’s trust. She decides to win his love back in a very unique way, by entering the wrestling ring. There’s a lot of Latin American cultural fusion in the novel, and that comes out in the lucha libre, or Mexican masked wrestling, that helps them reconcile.
 

The book is filled with strong women and female friendships. I wanted to show the way that all kinds of love go together in making a happy ending. For Vanessa, who heals from a really painful past, her female friends are absolutely necessary to her love story with Javier.

Describe the genre of this particular title, and is the only genre you write in? 

Can’t Buy Me Love is a contemporary romance that crosses over into women’s fiction as well. The book features a rather large cast for a romance, but they all develop the love story. My current work in progress is inspirational women’s fiction, but the ones I’ve outlined for next are other contemporary romances.

What I love about romance is how it has space for such a wide range of expression. I will probably alternate a bit between contemporary romance and women’s fiction, but I see the genres as kissing cousins. Sometimes I feel as though a love story needs a village to be successful, and other times the story can be told with the tight relationship focus that defines the romance genre in general.

When did you first consider yourself a writer, and when did you start writing toward publication?  

I first thought of myself as a writer in 7^th Grade, when I won the Promising Young Writers Award for a short story called “River, River.” It was about a woman who tried to elope with her intended, but who met a tragic end when her overbearing father kidnapped her and accidentally dropped her into an icy river when the hero gave chase. The final scene was in the lover’s point of view. He woke with a throbbing head and hoped he had just been drunk and imagined it, but there on the ice was the necklace he had given her the night before. I think we can see from that little summary that I had a flare for melodrama even at the ripe age of 12.

Starting the young? Amazing. What inspired you to write your first book?
A few things. We moved to a new house in the woods, and I think there’s something to that theory that green makes you more creative. Also, at the time, my dad was declining rapidly from late-stage ALS. I think that his failing health and death made me come to terms with a lot of things in life, and I processed it all by writing. Writing has always been my go-to for keeping sane, and I loved that it was there for me when I needed it.

Then, I had this niggling question at the back of my mind: what do women do with the gorgeous scrapbooks they make to chronicle their relationships, after they have moved on to a new love? That question was the push that set the book in motion.

Sorry about your dad, and glad your writing helped you through his passing. How did you get into romance writing?
I think my background in opera probably played a role. There’s always a love story when you’re singing. As an opera singer, you have to find the character’s motivation for her song, and it’s some type of love – love lost, love betrayed, love fulfilled, longing for love.

But I had no idea I was going to write a romance novel until I’d written it! I just sat down in a café one evening and started writing. The characters led the way. By the time I was finished with the revised draft, I had a major love story on my hands! I decided to join Romance Writers of America to help me navigate the new world I’d written myself into, and I haven’t looked back.

My characters are forceful, as well. They yell in my ear until I get them on a page. I happen to know you are a member at least one writing organizations. Have they helped?
Oh, yes! As I mentioned, I was totally ignorant of genre publishing when I found I had written a romance novel. The women at Heart of Carolina Romance Writers, the local chapter of Romance Writers of America, have given invaluable advice and been very patient in answering my questions! My critique group helped me a lot when I needed to rewrite the manuscript in a major overhaul.

At your advice, Nancy, I joined RWA-PRO after I signed my contract, and that group has helped me avoid a lot of pitfalls that typically afflict first-time writers. Besides the local RWA chapter, I am also a member of the RWA Women’s Fiction chapter, which has loads of online resources. They have helped me a great deal with promotions and genre-specific marketing.

Besides these, I am also a member of the North Carolina Writers’ Network, which not only helps us promote our books and appearances, but also has a fall conference that I find helpful in developing the growing edges of my writing.

What’s next for you?

I’m about 37,000 words into a Christian women’s fiction novel I’m calling Tea and Crumples. When that’s done, I have a couple of romances and an edgy mainstream fiction manuscript on line. Tea and Crumples is set in a tea shop/stationery store of the same name. It deals with how to navigate the intense temptations away from our better selves when faced with tremendous grief. Definitely a departure from the light-hearted feel of Can’t Buy Me Love! (Again, I blame opera.)

Nancy Lee Badger Interviews C. T. Nicholson

I have something very special for you today. Joining me is Debut Author C.T. Nicholson. Her first published book, Aiden's Betrayal is a Paranormal Romance and was released by Rebel Ink on February 3, 2013.
How exciting to have another opportunity to interview a newly published author! I remember my first book, back in 2010, and how 'getting the word out' was a new experience. Please tell my readers a little bit about your book.

Aiden's Betrayal is the first in the Guardians of the Society series. Aiden is a vampire who's already lost his mate and not expecting to meet a human who captures his attention. Elle is a simple human who just wants to keep living her boring life. Then she meets Aiden who's a vampire just like the one who killed her parents and he drags her into a world full of action and danger.

Describe the genre of this particular title, and is the only genre you write in?  

This is my paranormal romance and Forbidden Attraction, that's set to release in April, is my Sci-fi romance. I write romance only, but I am actually working on what I call my 'normal' book since there's nothing paranormal or sci-fi about it. It does have some sexy men in it!

Sexy men? Normal, I like! When did you start writing toward publication?

I only started writing three years ago with a few spaces in between. I never expected to be published and it's been a very unreal experience.

I grew up reading 'Drug Store Romance' and decided I could write like those authors only better. How did you get into romance writing?

Romance is all there is for me. I've never thought of writing or reading anything different. I'll love any book or movie as long as it has a good love story to it.

Who first introduced you to the love of reading?

I really didn't read much when I was younger, but when I was about seventeen, I was reading short Silhouette/Harlequin books and then my grandmother told me about different vampire books. I was skeptical at first and now that's practically all I read.

What do you see ahead in your writing career?

More writing! I want to further myself in my writing skills and become a bestselling writer one day. And I want to walk into a store and be like OMG that's my book! If they still have paperbacks by then.

Will you share some encouraging words for authors still struggling for that first contract? 
Keep writing no matter what. Set your goal and keep at it. (Thanks to Terry Spear for telling me that) I read my writing and either hate it or love it, so don't freak out if you're not happy with it. Just take a step back and it'll come to you.

I'm working on sequels to Aiden's Betrayal and Forbidden Attraction. I'm super excited to finish my 'normal' book and let people read it. I'm having so much fun writing it!

A little bit about the author

C.T. Nicholson juggles raising two kids with her husband, a full time job, and still manages to get her writing done. Sometimes she even manages to get some sleep . . . sometimes.
