Happy Holidays from Nancy Lee Badger

 

Chilly temps, flooding, snow drifts... whatever the weather you are experiencing, my wish for you is a quiet, colorful week followed by the enjoyment of the last few days of 2023.

Many of my readers are aware that 2023 was hard for me (eye surgery, two Emergency Room visits, two overnight stays due to trauma and then heart surgery) so I am looking forward to an uneventful 2024. 

I have had three vaccines since August (RSV, FLU, and Covid) so am hoping the pin-cushion days end soon, too. We all must decide what is best for US.

I am working on the family ancestry to make sure the next generation sees the strong, wonderful people we come from.

I want to continue with my writing and look forward to reading more. What will you be looking forward to next year?

"Santa is on his way," we hear kids say but I am looking forward to many other 'adult-themed' things. December 22st is called the Winter Equinox and is the shortest day of the year. What does that mean to me? The days start getting longer on December 23rd!

Thankful for an American Tradition

I am an American writer and will be enjoying Thursday November 23, 2023. We traditionally celebrate an American tradition. It is not just another Thursday in a busy month. (I celebrated another birthday, Veteran's Day makes us thank our military, and some towns held municipal voting.) 

It is a day filled with foods such as roast turkey, cranberry sauce, sweet potato casserole, and pies and has its origin based on the puritans and the indigenous people they met back in the early 17th century. The first Plimouth British Colony, which became Plymouth, Massachusetts, is steeped in history. 

We recently have learned that my husband can trace his roots to several of the passengers on the Mayflower which landed in what would become America in 1620, including original signers of the Mayflower Compact. We have traced his lineage back to six people, and we are working on a possible seventh. Considering only 53 people survived until autumn 1621 to enjoy the first 'thanksgiving,' what they went through is an amazing story.  

In 2021 and 2022 we traveled from North Carolina to Massachusetts to pay our respects at several graves at Burial Hill in Plymouth. Since finding out more about my husband's ancestry, we are taking this holiday a little more serious.

However you intend to celebrate the first Thanksgiving, when our country was only a British colony, stay safe and enjoy the week.

Hug Them Before They are Gone

Just got the news that another member of my parents' generation has passed away. If my calculations are correct, I have three (that is only 3) that are related to me as an aunt or uncle. Seeing as how I turn 70 soon, enjoying them while we can makes sense. Due to distance, it is rare to meet with them in person, but I do what I can with emails, letters, and social media.

Does this latest death make me feel that time is slipping away for me? YES! A recent heart surgery plus the bad fall that broke several of my bones last Spring can worry anyone. So, I will reach out to my cousins and let them know the loss of their family member hurts me as well. A simple card might not mean much, but I will do what I can. I would love to attend the funeral but the 600+ miles from here might not be feasible (did I mention recent heart surgery?)

Telling my sons about the passing was hard because they did not grow up near them, but they see the photos and understand what the loss means to me and my mom and sisters. What I have learned is that the world needs more HUGS!

If I was a Kid This Halloween...

...I would dress up in an awesome costume and terrorize... I mean, visit my neighbors in Raleigh, North Carolina. When I was a little girl, I would beg my parents for one of these fabulous costumes I found on Amazon.com  

Roy Rogers, Sky King, and The Lone Ranger were big on our little black & white TVs so who wouldn't want to be a COWBOY?

The Wizard of Oz was my favorite movie and we kids watched it on Thanksgiving Day. The tornado was so scary, but the characters were great. My favorite was DOROTHY. 

Then I had kids and I was on the other end, but kids everywhere might love to be... 

Severus Snape from the Harry Potter series. Villains work well on Halloween, or what the Celtic families of Scotland called Samhain. What about a NINJA?

And...who doesn't love a PIRATE (which is why my hero in THE ROGUES RING is one). A little birdie told me my adult son is dressing up as one for an upcoming Halloween celebration. GO ERIC!

I will be giving out candy this year as our neighborhood is bursting with young children. (No chocolate, so I will not be sneaking pieces). Enjoy the holiday!

Highland Games and Hurricanes

Our trip to New England to volunteer at the New Hampshire Highland Games hit a snag or two. After leaving North Carolina, we visited gravesites in upstate New York under blue skies, then traveled through the rain to visit our son in northern Vermont. After arriving in Lincoln, NH we met up with friends for breakfast at Flapjacks then set up our Information tent on the grounds of Loon Mountain Ski Area. A little overcast, but dry. Little did we know...

After a lovely dinner at Woodstock Station, we headed to bed. The games opened Friday. Again... the weather was dry and clear, even though the forecast was iffy. You see, Tropical Storm Lee was revving up to land nearby. 

A good night's sleep was interrupted Saturday at 5:29 a.m. when we learned NHScot.org had canceled Saturday's festivities due to threat's from Hurricane Lee. 

The weather in Lincoln never grew dangerous since Lee decided to swing toward Maine and Nova Scotia. Curtailing our three-day festivities (turning them into two) was too bad and disappointing to everyone...volunteers, performers, and visitors alike. Many had traveled a good distance, like us, to attend. Canceling a day's activities had never happened before. What we did manage to enjoy on Friday and Sunday nearly made up for everything which included the sheepdog trials, strongmen stone life, and Highland cows.

Where has the Summer Gone?

We've reached the middle of August and the dog days of summer are howling. I just saw a sign in a store saying they'd be closed on September 4th. Took me a while to figure out why. Labor day is coming! 

What have you accomplished this summer?

Did you travel now that the Covid-19 Pandemic is history?

Are you packing and planning to head back to college?

Are you house shopping? (Good luck- prices and mortgage rates have risen)

Have you finished that fabulous beach read?

My summer ran off the rails that day in May when I fell and broke my wrist and five ribs. Good News! My doctor took a last set of x-rays and said I was healed! My last physical therapy session for my wrist was last Wednesday. 

This fall is looking brighter and better with traveling on my mind!

This Summer Everyone is Hot

 About 7 a.m. each morning, when it is not raining, I grab my lawn chair, side table, coffee, and a book and set up in my front yard. Two old-growth trees shield me from the rising sun. The air is usually in the mid-70s F and I find the near-silence comfortable.

I have neighbors, and many walk by with their dogs. Everyone is respectful of property and usually share a friendly wave. As the morning progresses, others bring out their young children in baby carriages.

Reading is soothing and I am happy that I can finally hold a book without using a lap desk. My broken wrist is nearly healed and can hold the weight of a book or my cell phone. After checking my messages, I get back to reading. 

Tuesday I was met by a chipmunk and a small rabbit. Across from me, and standing in my yard was a doe. This looked like the same one that was recently parading around my neighborhood with three speckle-backed fawns. 

One neighbor wants nothing to do with any wild animals. He has a big garden and... well... animals like to eat. I share carrots and sunflower seeds...but not if he is watching!

The other day I heard the call of a hawk. I was expecting this since they leave their nests around this time and are hungry. Just last year I watched one land on a rabbit, holding him to the ground. I jumped outside and he let go. The rabbit ran, but a second hawk took him. Life and death within 5 miles of downtown Raleigh, North Carolina. 

My wrist has started to feel more flexible and I have just started typing with both hands, so I will get back to writing the next book soon. If the weather each morning is perfect, though, I will continue to read while sitting with my 'friends.'
