“[A] battle fraught with...the dirtiest of tricks...the stuff that destroys marriages, people, lives.... Sizzle through the summer with Sizzle.”—The Salem News

EXCERPT:
At Ledoyen, Marietta and Craig were seated at a table with an excellent view of the garden. Their wine was poured into crystal glasses, their courses dispensed from Louis XV serving carts. In such an atmosphere, it was difficult not to be warm and cordial, and Marietta sensed Craig's reserve yielding a little with every sip of wine.
She kept the conversation sprightly and flowing, and saw to it that they spoke a great deal about Craig's career and not at all about hers. By the time they were sipping their demitasse, the years seemed to have slipped away, and they were once again sharing special looks and laughter.
Before they left, Marietta turned for a last look at the garden. Craig's gaze followed hers, and he said:
"Everything they say about April in Paris is true, isn't it?"
"Suddenly I have a terrific yen for more chestnuts in blossom. Let's take a walk in the Bois de Boulogne."
Craig smiled indulgently. "Why not? Sounds like a pleasant way to work off some of our excess calories."
It had been ages since Marietta had been in the Bois. For years, Paris trips for her had meant board meetings and boutiques by day and café society by night, but her intuition told her that a stroll together through the park might awaken in Craig's mind fond memories of similar strolls through Central Park. Perhaps it did; he seemed even more relaxed and happy in the sun- dappled woods than he had been in the restaurant. It was his idea to hire a horse-drawn carriage so that they could view in style the lakes and waterfalls and the charming Parc de Bagatelle.
As they passed the nearby children's playground, Craig turned to Marietta and asked, "Have you ever been to the Jardin d'Acclimation?"
She shook her head.
"You don't know what you've been missing," he said, and he told the driver in perfect French to take them there.
Marietta had expected—or hoped—that they were heading for romantic gardens where he'd suggest a stroll beneath shady trees beside a sparkling lake, and was surprised and disappointed when the driver reined his horse before the entrance to a combination children's zoo and amusement park.
Craig paid the driver and helped her from the carriage. "You're going to love this," he said.
She doubted that very much.
She was wrong. The Jardin d'Acclimation was designed to charm both child and adult alike. Perhaps adults enjoyed it most of all, for the true joys of childhood, like so many of life's delights, are never really appreciated until they are forever lost. Marietta and Craig paddled a boat across a clear lagoon, laughed in the house of funny mirrors, tried their luck on the archery range and at miniature golf, ate warm waffles, and fed the animals. She couldn't remember when she'd had so much fun. Or perhaps she could: seventeen years before, bundled up against the cold, strolling hand in hand with Craig, tasting New York City's delights.
Later, Craig whisked her in a cab to the Porte Dauphine. "You've never seen Paris until you've seen this," he said, and gestured toward the Etoile, painted gold and pink in the light of the setting sun.
Marietta caught her breath. "It's beautiful!" she said. But even as the words were leaving her mouth, even as her eyes continued to take in the scene before her, she was aware of a subtle change in Craig. He was no longer gazing in awe at the Etoile. He was looking at her; she could feel it. And she could feel, too, that if she turned to look at him, she'd find the awe still in his eyes, but directed toward her. Sunsets enhanced her charms, silhouetting her fine profile, deepening the coppery tone of her hair. Slowly, her heart pounding, she turned to him. She was right. In his eyes she saw the same desire that had been there seventeen years before.
"I don't want this day to end," she said.
He didn't kiss her, as she had hoped he would, but his gaze slipped down and caressed her lips, then returned to meet hers. "Neither do I," he said huskily. "I'll pick you up for dinner at eight-thirty."

Nancy Lee Badger Interviews Author Chris Marie Green

Please welcome Chris Marie Green. We have a treat because she talks about not one but TWO books!

RED WEDDING (sequel to TERROR ISLAND) is a mystery thriller with a touch of romance and will be released widely on February 16.

TERROR ISLAND, the first book in Chris’ “Final Girls” series, was released in June, 2015. Please tell my readers more.

Chris- When I wrote TERROR ISLAND, it was in the spirit of a slasher horror movie where the “Final Girl” is strong, smart, and always the last one standing. I wanted there to be a lot of action, creepy atmosphere, and a mystery that would hopefully keep the readers guessing as a group of people are stranded on a remote island, only to face a killer in their midst. I loved the heroine, Katsu Espinoza, and knew that she had many more scary adventures to experience, so that’s how RED WEDDING was born. This book features a psycho who lures Kat to an eerie old house that holds bloody secrets…and another murderous scenario. Readers will also meet a second Final Girl in this book. As the series goes on with more mysteries, other Final Girls will join them.

Nancy- Describe the genre of this particular title, and is it the only genre you
write in?

Chris- I started off describing this series as a “mystery romantic thriller” one, but RED WEDDING really puts the emphasis on “mystery” and “thriller.” In fact, since I am such a freak for old slasher movies (usually from the 80s!), I’d like to add that aspect to the description. So “slasher mystery thriller” it is!

This isn’t my only genre. I also write paranormals and urban fantasy as Chris Marie Green. I also write romances as Crystal Green, my “sunny side.” <G>

Nancy- Having achieved your goal to be a published author, what is the most rewarding thing?

Chris- I love when the worlds I create come alive for readers and they respond to that. As a reader myself, I know what it’s like to be inspired by books and to completely lose yourself in them. It still surprises me that I’ve been able to do that for some people. I once wrote a series called Vampire Babylon, and I still get emails about those books, and every single one is a thrill to me.

Nancy- I recently met you at a Romance Writers of America chapter's conference. Are you a member of any writing organizations and, if so, have they helped

Chris- I owe so much to RWA. Without them, I would’ve never learned to hone my craft or take the business more seriously. They changed everything about the way I was approaching writing. Novelists, Inc., is also an incredible organization; it brings novelists of all genres together. I feel like they are leaders in the publishing industry.

Please Share three fun facts about you that most people don’t know.
1) Once upon a time, I would watch the first STAR WARS everyday, and I made my brother watch with me.
2) I have some awesome Princess Leia t-shirts, including one that says, “Don’t mess with a Princess.” <G>
3) I have a treasured letter from Valerie Sherwood, who responded to a fan letter from me when I was 19 and writing my first book.

Nancy- What’s next for you?

Chris- I’m writing a couple of projects for Crystal Green right now, but after that, I’m going to dive in to the third Final Girls book. I’ll be watching lots of horror movies to get in the groove!

BOOK BLURB for TERROR ISLAND, out now

It all started with a good-time cruise at sea…

When diver Katsu Espinoza is invited on a shark-cage expedition by her billionaire mentor, she’s definitely up for some adventure, even if it means spending time with his greedy heirs. Then she sees who the captain is—Will Ashton, the betraying ex-boyfriend who’d once shattered her heart. And as if that isn’t unexpected enough, her mentor decides that she’s going to inherit the millions of dollars that were supposed to go to his family!

…and turned into hell on earth when they got to the island.

Suddenly, Kat is the girl who swept in to steal a frail old man’s inheritance. Then a storm hits, stranding all of them on a deserted island, forcing them to survive in a paradise gone deadly, because it seems that someone here hasn’t forgotten the money; they’re murdering victims with gruesome precision—and Will, with his secretive ways, is at the top of Kat’s growing list of suspects. And that list is getting horrifically whittled down one…by one…by one…

Nancy Lee Badger Interviews Author Caroline Lee

Caroline Lee stopped by to share intimate details of her life, and to talk about her book. Where They Belong is a sweet historical romance and was released before Christmas, 2015. Please tell my readers a little bit about your book.

Caroline- The Sweet Cheyenne Quartet is my Western holiday series. It follows the Barker/Murray family and their friends, as each finds love in unexpected places. In A Cheyenne Thanksgiving, for instance, family friend and neighbor Cam McLeod rescues a beautiful Chinese woman wandering across the Wyoming plains—talk about unexpected! But this book (it’s really a long novella) is a particularly special holiday story; it’s the story of the youngest Murray sister, Annie, who is deaf. Since the very first book, I had readers asking me when Annie was going to get her story, but I hesitated, because I was concerned about how to build a relationship (in 1890) when one character couldn’t hear. It took me a while to write, but I think I did her (and the relationship) justice. Both Annie and Reggie (who was introduced as the wastrel younger brother in A Cheyenne Celebration) are struggling to choose between two worlds and two futures. It’s a Christmas story about finding one’s place, and about figuring out Where They Belong. Reviewers tell me that they’ve laughed and cried multiple times while reading it, which is a grand compliment to an author.

Want to know a secret? I wrote the story, and I still cry every single time I read the big “grovel” in the final scene. Reggie is such a sweetheart, and I love how he really “gets” her.

Nancy- Readers do not understand that authors love their characters, and how much their stories affect even them. Describe the genre of this particular title, and is it the only genre you write in?

Caroline- I have a Master’s Degree in social history, with a focus on the history of marriage. When my colleagues asked me if I was going on to get my doctorate, I laughed and showed them my first book. I love putting my degree to use this way! I only write historical romance, but I’m not limited to sweet western holiday stories. I’ve got a wonderful book out (Brothers of Baird’s Cove: Renegade) set on an island off the coast of Charleston, SC during Reconstruction, and I’ve been working on the other two books in that series.

Nancy- I love the Charleston area. I am originally from New York, raised a family and started writing in New Hampshire, and have now fallen in love with my new home in the southern United States. When did you start writing toward publication?

Caroline- In 2013 I answered a prompt from Avon for Christmas romances. My story didn’t get into that anthology, but I thought that it was pretty good, so I decided to share it online. Amazon was obviously the best choice for distribution, and I had to choose a nominal fee to publish. I didn’t even realize that what I was doing was called “Independent Publishing”, but I loved it. The next year I did it again, and The Sweet Cheyenne Quartet was born.

I’m a huge proponent of self—or independent—publishing (and I’m happy to chat with anyone about it!). There’s nothing a publisher can do for me that I can’t do myself (or hire someone to do, rather). That’s really liberating… but it can be lonely too. A publisher offers a support network and a marketing team that, while I can hire, I can’t really match. So there are real benefits to both routes to publication, but I’m still firmly in the independent camp. I love the control!

Nancy- Will you share some encouraging words for authors still struggling for that first contract?

Caroline- Write. Write write write. Write because you love it, because you have a story in you that needs to be told. After that one has been told, tell another and another. Then join a writing organization (I’m a member of my local Romance Writers of America chapter) that will help you become a better writer, through workshops and seminar and critiquing. Even joining a local group that meets at the nearest Starbucks is helpful; the support and accountability will do wonders for your word count and your skills. Then write some more. And remember that a contract with a publisher isn’t the only path to publication. We think of it as validation, to receive that contract… but your first monthly paycheck from Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publication will be just as validating, I promise.

Please Share three fun facts about you that most people don’t know.
1) I cry/laugh/sigh romantically over my own work. Even my old stories.
2) My youngest son inherited my collection of stuffed hedgehogs, which all have “H” names.
3) I work for George Mason University’s LIFE Program, a post-secondary program for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Nancy- What’s next for you?

Caroline- I have three different series I’m working on write now (get it?). Two new (secret) ones and the Brothers of Baird’s Cove Trilogy. You’ll see some of those later this year! And of course, there’s going to be a Sweet Cheyenne Christmas story in 2016, and probably an Easter one in 2017.

BOOK BLURB
Where They Belong: A Sweet Cheyenne Christmas Novella
Small-town girl Annie Murray is excited about the adventure of a grand coming-out season in New York City over the holidays, but it doesn’t take long to realize that the offer isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Annie is deaf, and has spent years changing herself—how she communicates—to fit in with “proper” society. She’s even learned to speak, for goodness’ sake! But the only thing these people seem to care about is how different she sounds, and it’s darned galling to know that she is still not acceptable. In fact, the only person in New York who tries to make her feel comfortable at all is Dr. Reginald Carderock.

Reggie knows what it’s like to feel like you don’t belong someplace. He was born and raised among the Fifth Avenue elite, but is only barely tolerated these days. His friends and family don’t understand how he can spend all of his time treating the city’s poor at his clinic, or what he could possibly see in his brother’s little deaf student. But the more time he spends in Annie’s company, the more intrigued he is by her strength, determination, and compassion.

Just when the two of them figure they’ve reached an understanding, they get the worst possible news from Annie’s family in Cheyenne. Now they’re stuck together in a mad dash across the country, dreading what they’ll find at the end. It’s a crummy way to spend Christmas Eve, and Reggie knows that he might lose her forever when they reach their destination. He’ll need to figure out a way to show her that he can see her for who she truly is.

Which is good, because all she wants for Christmas is for him to hear the words she’s not saying.

More About the Author

Caroline Lee is what George R.R. Martin once described as a "gardener author"; she delights in creating interesting and lovable characters, and allowing them to lead their own stories. Often they draw the story along to completely unexpected--and wonderful!--places. She considers a story a success if she can re-read it and sigh dreamily... and she wishes the same for you.

A love of historical romance prompted Caroline to pursue her degrees in social history; her Master's Degree is in Comparative World History, which is the study of themes across history (for instance, 'domestication of animals throughout the world,' or 'childhood through history'). Her theme? You guessed it: Marriage throughout world history. Her favorite focus was periods of history that brought two disparate peoples together to marry, like marriage in the Levant during the Kingdom of Jerusalem, or marriage between convicts in colonial New South Wales. She hopes that she's able to bring this love of history-- and this history of love-- to her novels.

Each one of the books in her Sweet Cheyenne Quartet has reached the Best-Sellers list on Amazon, and all are available in e-book and paperback formats. Caroline is living her own little Happily Ever After with her husband and sons in North Carolina.

My Hunted Highlander-Scottish Time Travel & GIVEAWAY

Would you like to win this Scottish Window sticker? First, let me tell you about my latest Scottish time travel romance. My Hunted Highlander takes place in two distinct locations. Can a location be a character in a romance novel? YES!

The fictitious New England Highland Games are located in the present-day White Mountains of New Hampshire. The mountains in September, the oddly changing weather between this place and the wintry weather of the other locale, give my hero and heroine many problems to overcome, while falling in love.

The North Sea plays a vital part, as my hero starts the book by being rescued by pirates. When he escapes the Scottish pirates' hidden island, and heads to the mainland, the snow begins to fall. Keep warm with My Hunted Highlander!

Here is an excerpt from My Hunted Highlander, a full-length novel available in ebook & print:

The small craft slipped into the surf. Niall jumped into the boat, and helped Blair climb in. Waves thundered nearby, and the memory of Blair’s crushed skiff made him set the oars into motion. Thrusting them into the turbulent sea, they rode over the waves, until the boat entered calmer water. Keegan unfurled the sail, and Blair worked the rudder.
“What can I do?” Niall asked, after pulling in the oars, feeling slightly useless.
“Take over when I tire. Right now, my adrenaline is making my blood race!”
   “Adrenel-what?”
“Never mind. No time to explain. We have to get away, in case we’re followed.” She turned to her son. “Keegan, hide under that canvas and get some sleep.”
Keegan nodded, then gazed up at her. “What happened? Why do we no’ take The Black Thistle?”
She sighed. How much of their problem would she share with the lad? Though small, Keegan was smart. He trusted his mother. Niall did, as well.
“Raven has mutinied against me. He tried to kill Balfour.”
   “Nay, I canno’ believe that.”
“He tried to slay yer mother, as well, lad,” Niall added, “so ‘twas time to go.”
The lad’s eyes widened, and he swallowed hard, but did not say another word. He had not burst into tears, even though they had left behind everything, and everyone, he knew. Once Keegan was safely secured beneath the tented canvas, Niall sat beside Blair, with the rudder between them.
“He is a brave lad. Just like his mother.”
She smiled, but the smile did not reach her eyes. “Yes, but he’s a handful. I could not have left without him.”
   “Understandable, Blair.”
She visibly bristled, then her shoulders sagged. “Right. I am no longer the captain of a Scottish pirate ship. Now, I’m nothing.”
“Nay, lass. Ye be more than a title. Yer a mother, a lover, and I wish to know more.”
She smiled sheepishly. When her cheeks darkened beneath the moonlight, she cupped his cheek. “You know more about me, than most men.”

“Aye, we have shared our bodies, yet I yearn to learn more about the woman.”

Me on an Australian Blog? Aye, Mate!

Last November, another writer suggested I try to land a spot on the Australian Romance Readers Association Blog, which she highly recommended.

My Scottish-themed books sell well in Australia, so I gave it a try. I had just released My Dark Highlander November 1st, and had SHIVER: a White Mountains Thriller coming out December 1st. I was also working on bringing out My Honorable Highlander as an audio book with Audible in January.

When the contact person at ARRA got back to me rather quickly, she stated they were booked through mid-August. Well, I was also working on the final book in my Kilted Athletes Through Time series. Would I be done and published by then?

I decided I could make it work, which is another great attribute of being a self-published or Indie Author. So I grabbed the August 16, 2015 spot.

Their organization asked for an article...a story from my perspective, which can then explain how I came to write my book. My Hunted Highlander is my 6th Scottish time travel book and was released June 16th. Inspiration came my way through my volunteer work, which is why the article is titled

Inspiration Wrapped in Plaid

Nancy Lee Badger Welcomes Author Kathryn Royce-Martin

One author's journey : The Prophecy Series - Kathryn Royce-Martin
Hi everyone, my name is Kathryn Royce-Martin and I'm here today to tell you a little about myself and my debut novel Prophecy Unravelled. Before I start, I wanted to say a big thank you to Nancy Lee Badger for having me as her guest.

So, to begin,  you should know that I'm addicted to rugged, sexy heroes, in my books that is, as long as there's also a strong and beautiful heroine supporting them, however, trouble along the way is a given and so much fun to write!

Just to let you know a little about myself, my family came to Australia from the U.K. in 1962. We lived in the migrant hostel "Silver City' for a short while, while my father looked for work. Someone told him that there was work in Geelong and we journeyed on the train to stay briefly with the friend of a friend for a while until we were able to purchase a home.

Being the youngest of three children, I would spend hours as a young child making up stories in my head.  I always asked for a book for Christmas and remember the first time that I read The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. My family wasn't particularly well off so I had to wait for my birthday for the next in the series and Christmas for the next and so on. This was the beginning of my lifelong love of reading.

At secondary school, I was one of those nerds who loved the Library! I also loved English classes, especially when we were given a reading task or a prompt to write to and I won a number of awards for my stories.

Now, I'm all grown up, well maybe! I only read what I enjoy. If a story doesn't grab me within the first few pages I find it hard to continue reading, that's what I aspire to in my writing, to grab the reader from the outset.

My claim to fame is that I went to school with Isobelle Carmody - Of Obernewtyn fame...
Oh, and I've met Richard Dean Anderson at OzComicon!!!!! :-)

I've thought about writing a manuscript for many years, but put my writing aspirations on hold several times during my life for a variety of reasons, not least of which was a lack of confidence that my work would be good enough for others to read

So, to that end, I located and undertook numerous online writing courses with the wonderful Terry Spear. With Terry's help and encouragement both my writing and confidence improved.

Once again I began work on my novel, this time with a clear picture of my goal and the storyline in my head. My final inspiration to actually knuckle down was watching The Adventures of Merlin, although that had a most dissatisfying end and I vowed that my stories would always end happily, one way or another.

So, inspired by an image of my favourite Knight, Sir Gwaine, played by the Irish actor, Eoin Macken, Prophecy Unravelled began to flow onto the page with a working title of The Golden Stone. I connected with Eoin on Twitter and shared my inspiration with him. He was very supportive and it was enough, with everything else, to make me determined to have my manuscript published.

The characters grew as I wrote. I always knew that I wanted the story to revolve around a heroine, but in the end, several of the main characters shared the limelight with Tarienne. Tarienne evolved into a  complex blend of fierce and vulnerable, a powerful, yet sensual and loving Fae princess who becomes the glue holding the men she cares about together during their difficult quest to return the balance of magic to the Kingdom of Therin.

Before Prophecy Unravelled was finished, I'd edited the entire manuscript around 5 times. My beta readers were amazing, providing suggestions and constructive criticism and finally it was finished.
So here I am, excited that I achieved my initial goal and well on the way toward finishing Secret Alpha, the next story in the Prophecy Series.

BLURB
Prince Aidan’s life was mapped out. He would be the King of Therin when his father died. He would protect the people, lead the army to fight for the Kingdom and he liked to think that he would be remembered for his skills as a warrior and strategist.

The arrival of Tarienne at Castle Therin changed everything. In the space of three years, she had managed to turn his world upside down, challenging everything Aidan believed in.

Charged with protecting Prince Aidan so that he could fulfill a prophecy that he knew nothing of, Tarienne didn’t expect to become friend and confidante, nor be part of a ruse, feigning courtship with the classically handsome Prince. Despite her relationship with Aidan, the passion that Daien, Aidan’s dearest friend and one of the King’s Guards, ignites within Tarienne from the moment they meet, complicates her life at court.
Can she keep her magical abilities a secret, maintain the pretence of loving Aidan, convince him of his role in the prophecy, and, make the breathtakingly handsome warrior, Daien, aware of her interest, all under the ever watchful scrutiny of an unforgiving King, who is vehemently opposed to magic?

EXCERPT:
Tarienne called out, her heart pounding with terror as she searched the battlefield for Aidan and Daien, unable to find them in the aftermath of the bloody conflict. Her stomach churned at the sight of broken and bleeding bodies strewn across the battle field. The river ran red with the blood of the dead and dying. Her face dripped with tears, shed for the soldiers she knew, their limp, lifeless bodies, crumpled on the muddy ground. Never to return to their loved ones. Was anyone left alive?
Suddenly she spotted him, the lifeless body of Daien, his battle garb slick with his own blood, his brown eyes open, empty of the warmth and laughter that had lived there. She cried out, rushing to him. She almost slipped in the slimy mixture of blood and mud as she navigated around the corpses. The stench of death threatened to overwhelm her as she sank to her knees at Daien's side. Her body racked with sobs as she grasped at his now ice cold hand. She flung herself over his chest, "NO, NO, NO." She screamed and couldn't stop.
Tarienne woke in a cold sweat, her heart pounding. Sitting bolt upright in bed, she fought to retain the contents of her stomach. Her breath coming in short gasps, it took her a few moments to realise it had been a nightmare. Not real. She shivered despite the first shafts of warm sunlight peeking through the edges of the heavy curtains that covered the thick glass windows. Wrapping her arms around herself, she shook her head to dispel the disturbing images. A tear escaped, trickling down her cheek. It felt too real.

What's next?:
What's next for me? Well, I'm currently writing the second book in the Prophecy series, entitled Secret Alpha. This follows the story of the wolf changeling, Tere from Prophecy Unravelled.

I'm also working on a time travel romance with a working title of Second Chances, that deviates from my usual paranormal genre but began forming in my brain a while ago. I took the opportunity to put pen to paper, so to speak, recently when I had a bit of a brain freeze about  Tere's story which is now all moving along nicely, evolving into a suspenseful tale of hardship, love and loss. Tere's story is at times heart wrenching, the tale of a young cub raised in violence and fear, whose strength and compassion rises against all odds.

Next will be Raef's story, Tarienne's brother and the Crown Prince of the Fae Kingdom of Darewood. Raef is a powerful and handsome Fae warrior who has a dark secret that he fears will drive away the only woman he has ever loved...stay tuned. :-)

About the author:
Kathryn's love of reading and writing started in her school years, where she earned many awards for her poetry and short stories. On leaving school, Kathryn put aside her dream of being a journalist, opting instead
for the more stable choice of a nursing career. When fate brought her to a job in a Library, her dreams were rekindled, but put on hold to raise her family. She contented herself with reading widely, always searching for new authors' works to devour. From Narnia to the Lord of the Rings, magic, shifters and highland romances, her printed book collection is one of her greatest treasures, although she also loves to read works downloaded to her kindle. She has undertaken many online writing courses.
Kathryn works full time as a Librarian in a University Library in Victoria, Australia. She lives with her husband, grown-up children, two dogs named Daisy and Milly, an aging Chinchilla x Persian cat, called Matilda and a canary with the perplexing name of Roy.
