March is Marching Closer

Here in Raleigh, NC the weather has improved, but much of the northern Midwest and New England is suffering through the aftermath of ice and snow. Is there anything more inconsistent than the weather?

My phone, the television, and the radio keep me up-to-date but the real hint of spring is felt the moment I walk outside. (At this writing, our doors are open and the birds are singing, while the squirrels are chasing each other.)

For me, just a few weeks after cataract surgery, I am getting back into writing. On Wednesday last I finished editing and formatting my next book, The Rogue's Ring. It is the third full-length book in my Treasure Tales series and follows The Earl's Treasure and The Duke's Diamond. Here is the plot in a nutshell (yep, still thinking about those darn squirrels.)

Heading out on his horse, Ghost, into the snowy Highlands of Scotland in January 1817 was not sane, but Bryce Ketteridge would never let down his friends. If a duke, an earl, and a former spy felt finding the owners of nobleman’s rings was important, he would do his share. Coming across masked bandits, and shooting one, turned his life on end. What follows was not in his plans.

The last thing Cat Douglas wished to do was steal coins from the handsome stranger she meets at a tavern. When he later shoots her while she threatened a nobleman’s coach, she suspected he had no idea it was her. Kidnapped boys, pirate threats, and murder propel them to save a boy named Blake. He was, after all, special to them both.

My next challenge is creating a book cover that does the story justice AND reminds readers of Books #1 and #2. I have already chosen the couple who will grace the cover, but I still need a background. Should I use an ocean scene? A pirate ship? His horse? The cave she lived in? Lots to decide. Once I have a cover, I will upload the ebook information to Amazon and others, which will give me a chance to let my readers know that the book will be released on May 12th.

I hope you signed up to get my infrequent newsletters because I also will be giving away an Amazon gift card very soon! Signing up is free and I NEVER share your name or emails. Click HERE to sign-up.

While you wait for my new book, make sure to read Books #1 and #2. Each will take you on a fantastic treasure hunt while my three brooding men find love in the Highlands of Scotland.

It is SUMMER TIME!

Have I told you how much I enjoy getting up early, pulling out the lawn chair and bucket of sunflower seeds, and welcoming my neighborhood critters? A carrot brings out two rabbits including the little fellow (above).

I love to read and am currently getting paid to read, but I am also trying to write more stories that keep screaming to be put on paper.

What's next?

I finished a Scottish historical adventure, set around a medieval Christmas. A GIFT FROM THE SEA will be released November 1st in an Anthology created by a group of authors we are calling YULETIDE KISSES. Yum!

In January 2023, I will release the third (fourth?) book in my Treasure Tales series. The series actually started with LOVE, HAMISH, a novella, then was followed by full-length historical novels THE EARL'S TREASURE and THE DUKE'S DIAMOND

Writing and reading keeps me busy and I hope you are enjoying the weather and 'friends' like I am doing.

Another Birthday and Another Book by Nancy Lee Badger

I am celebrating my birthday month (yes, at my age I take a whole month because Scorpios do whatever they want!) During the month, I will travel, eat good food, and write a new book. This book will be the third full-length novel in my Treasure Tales series.

This month, though, I released the latest book in print. The Duke's Diamond follows The Earl's Treasure and Love, Hamish and I enjoy writing about dukes, earls, rogues, and Scottish lasses as they search castles, caves and pirate ships for treasure.

Sound interesting? Check out all ebook and print book choices HERE

Strawberry Time means a FREE Recipe

The weather is warming up and strawberries are ripening here in North Carolina. Its a treat since I recall having to wait until July to pick strawberries back when we lived in New Hampshire. I saw a recipe and decided to make it as sugar-free as possible.

Nancy's Strawberry Cheesecake

2 pints strawberries, hulled and divided

2/3 cup plus 2 Tablespoons Splenda

8 rectangles graham crackers, crushed

1/2 cup butter, melted

` 8 oz pack 1/3 Fat cream cheese

2 teaspoons vanilla

3/4 container sugar-free whipped topping

In blender or food processor, roughly cut then blend 1 pint of the strawberries. Add 2 Tablespoons Splenda and the vanilla. Place mixture in a saucepan and bring to a boil, stirring for about 5 minutes. Cool completely.

In a bowl combine the graham cracker crumbs and butter, pour into a 9" springform pan, pie pan, aor cake pan. Tamp down with the bottom of a small measuring cup, then place in freezer.

In a mixing bowl or food processor, blend the cream cheese until smooth. Add cooled strawberry mixture, 2/3 cup Splenda, and vanilla. Mix. Add cool-wip and blend.

Remove crust from freezer and pour in the mixture. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate. at least 4 hours. When ready to serve. add halves of strawberries on top and enjoy!

The weather might be warming up, BUT... if you are in need of a book to read while snacking on your cheesecake, consider The Earl's Treasure. Here is a short sample.

Chapter

 South of the Scottish border

December 1816

A door slammed, and Adele grabbed the top of her dressing table to keep from tumbling from the cushioned stool. Her startled movement caused Violet to almost pull a handful of her hair from the roots. Closing her eyes, Adele choked back a whimper.

“Be still, my lady. ’Tis only the wind. I fear winter is making itself known.”

Adele shivered. Not from the gathering cold that swept over the English countryside and seeped through the manor’s cracked windows, but from the thought of venturing into the public’s eye tonight.

Light snow had started to fall that morning, darkening her mood and making her rethink her plans. Breathing slowly and pulling strength from deep inside, she concentrated on her young maid. Violet, her dark red hair tucked beneath a white mobcap, hummed a Scottish nursery tune.

The servant helped her dress for an invitation she should have ignored. How unfortunate that Violet ran the hairbrush through Adele’s long curls as if currying a horse. Since trying and failing to sell enough personal effects to pay wages, she had no cause to complain.

However, a question scratched at her mind. In lieu of wages, had Violet taken her silver mirror, the one her father had presented to her as a wedding gift? Would her servants resort to theft without asking for their wages first?

“There, my lady, yer hair shines like spun gold.”

Adele huffed in exasperation as the maid tugged and twirled and pinned her hair upon her head.

“Thank ye, Violet, though my hair is a tad too dark to call gold. Why can I not wear it in a bun at the nape of my neck as I normally do?”

“Nay, my lady! Yer a baroness! ’Tis fine for a simple life at home, here at Maxwell Hall, but not for a ball at the Duke of Bellmeer’s estate!”

“I suppose ye speak the truth, although I am concerned the dress will not do me justice.”

“Doono’ fret. Let me help ye into yer lovely gown.”

Adele had to agree the icy blue fabric’s beauty thrilled her. “’Tis not even mine.” She’d traded several jars of homemade blackberry jam with a neighbor for its use tonight. Violet clicked her tongue and helped Adele to her feet.

The fledgling maid slipped the borrowed gown over the long curls pinned atop Adele’s head. Adele fluffed the skirt and smoothed the shoulder-baring bodice, then stood as still as a Lochmaben Standing Stone.

From the corner of her eye, her image in the cracked looking-glass atop her dressing table was less than flattering. The gown itself was pretty, but two or three years out of fashion. She didn’t mind. The rounded bodice cradled her generous breasts, but felt too loose in other places.

A deep breath and a less than stellar smile would keep Violet from fussing over her any longer, but Adele’s senses reeled as the hour to depart drew near. Panic grew with every labored breath.

Ridiculous!

She had no reason to be afraid. Any excuse for leaving Maxwell Hall ought to be a cause for celebration, not something to fear. She had to go. She must thank Fanny Hartwell for inviting her to the ball. The dowager duchess had spent months trying to coax her to return to society and would welcome Adele’s presence, tonight.

“Although, staying home would be a lot less trouble.”

“Did ye say something, my lady?”

Adele snorted.

She seldom talked anymore. Over the last few years, she’d lived like a recluse and so unlike the lass of her youth. Fanny’s ball, at her grandson’s nearby great estate, might turn into an opportunity to end her loneliness. Meeting neighbors and nobles from London was a treat and she would mingle, dance, and enjoy the company of ladies and well-dressed men.

Liar.

Chocolate Chip Cookies from Author Nancy Lee Badger

Life is getting super busy and I keep praying I am up to the task. Scheduling the vaccine for me, hubby, and mom was tougher than it should have been, but I am thrilled we are vaccinated. Assisting my adult son in moving out of his apartment has strained many muscles but I consider it a way to get ready to go back to the gym. I am hard at work finishing up my second book in my Treasure Tales series, a historical romance set in northern England and Scotland. I will get the edits done on The Duke's Diamond after I finalize a fantastic ending, so it can join The Earl's Treasure. Coffee and cookies are my secret to getting through it all!

Nancy's Soft & Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Cover two large baking sheets with parchment paper for easy cleanup. Otherwise use ungreased cookie sheets.

2 1/4 Cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon Crisco or similar shortening

3/4 Cup sugar ( I use Splenda)

3/4 Cup brown sugar

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

2 eggs

2 Cups chocolate chips (I use semi-sweet)

Stir together flour, baking soda, and salt and set aside. Cream together Crisco, sugars, vanilla. Add eggs one at a time. Mix to make sure all are blended. Add dry ingredients, slowly. Fold in chocolate chips and drop by heaping teaspoons onto cookie sheets, leaving about two inches between for spread. Bake about 8 minutes, or until lightly browned on edges. Do not overbake! Let cool on cookie sheets about 5 minutes then slide onto a rack. Repeat and enjoy!

These cookies are delicious and go well with a big glass of milk, too. Making food from scratch with no preservatives is a healthy alternative to store-bought cookies.

Entertainment during this pandemic is also healthy to a person's well-being so remember to READ BOOKS.

A New Year and a Recipe

Let's not speak of 2020 anymore. Everyone agrees that the last 365 days were the worst anyone under 60 has seen. I grew up with the threat of polio, whooping cough, measles, and even swine flu, but this pandemic seems worse.

My quarantine ended January 1st, meaning Christmas was quiet. My relative is still testing positive for Covid-19 so she is having an even uglier time. My worry about her is brutal.

I turned to baking. The least we family members can do is deliver food to her or bake her some treats and meats.

This has given me the idea to share recipes on my blog along with words of encouragement and maybe a mention of one of my books. She really enjoyed my meatloaf and I was happy to know she got a lot of protein.

NANCY'S MEATLOAF

Heat oven to 350 degrees F

3 lbs ground meat (73 or 80%)

1 yellow onion, diced

2 eggs

1 cup or more plain bread crumbs

6 or more slices bread, older the better, torn into small pieces

about 1/2 cup ketchup

Prepare 2 8 inch or 9 inch loaf pans, glass or metal, by lightly greasing

After washing your hands, mix all ingredients in a large bowl. Really get it all mixed well, then press into the two loaf pans. Press firmly around edges to give it a hump. This leaves space for the grease to go. (Have a grease can ready!) Bake at 350 degrees about an hour. For a crispier loaf, reduce heat to 325 and give it another 20 minutes.

I like to dribble more ketchup over the top. My late Aunt Almeda served hers with brown gravy. Mashed potatoes on the side are a must!

Enjoy this protein-rich comfort food and STAY SAFE!

Release Day and SALE for The Earl's Treasure by Nancy Lee Badger

My new release, The Earl's Treasure, is the first book in my series Treasure Tales. Here is a short description of the Historical Romance set in the weeks before Christmas in 1816:

After Stone is wounded and thrust into an earldom, and Adele is widowed by an abusive husband, these star-crossed childhood friends meet at an English country ball, escape a kidnapper searching for a treasure, and depart for Scotland ahead of those intent on killing anyone in their way.

PG Excerpt from this Steamy Full-length Novel

“Stone, ’tis not acceptable,” Adele said.

   “What are ye talking about?”

She turned and stepped away. “Stone, ye forget yerself. Please do not trifle with me. Yer kisses be…nice. Lovely, even, but I am not looking for a lover.”

“Why not me? Adele, my sweet, ye intrigue me one minute, exasperate me the next and then ye make me yearn to touch ye, smell ye, taste ye.”

“Wouldn’t any woman suffice? I am sure there are more than a few willing servants about. I watched them glance yer way, our first night here.”

“Truly?” He straightened his back, then strutted around the table like a peacock. “Nice to know I’m appreciated.”

“Is that what ye want? To be appreciated? Why haven’t ye settled down with a countess and raised a pack of future earls and lords? What of love?”

“Love? What does love have to do with anything?”

Adele fisted her hands by her sides, and strode closer to the fire. When he didn’t follow her, she suffered a moment of wistful indecision, as if her body said yes, while her mind said no. Would finding pleasure in Stone’s bed be so wrong? Widowed and possibly barren, what would be the harm? Rupert only gave her pain and restlessness. With fists and belts his punishment of choice, he used them whenever he returned home from his little treasure hunts.

“And now I be keeper of the treasure.” She fingered the velvet pouch between her breasts, confident the gem existed.

“Yer wrong,” Stone whispered. His arm circled her waist and he pulled her into his side. “Yer the treasure. I promise to keep ye safe.”

Nancy Lee Badger's SNEAK PEEK!

Did I mention winter is around the corner? We set our clocks BACK an hour on Sunday morning in many parts of the world (not you, Hawaii) which will mean I will be getting out of work at my county's Board of Elections in the DARK.

Well, that temporary job will end soon and no matter who is our next president, our lives will be different. This pandemic has made it hard for many and I feel books are one way to get an escape from all the craziness. The Earl's Treasure will be released on December 1st. Below is a sample chapter section. Enjoy!

Chapter One

 South of the Scottish border

December 1816

A door slammed, and Adele grabbed the top of her dressing table to keep from tumbling from the cushioned stool. Her startled movement caused Violet to almost pull a handful of her hair from the roots. Closing her eyes, Adele choked back a whimper.

Meeting neighbors and nobles from London was a treat and she would mingle, dance, and enjoy the company of ladies and well-dressed men.

Liar.

The sudden image of her late husband made her stomach clench and her palms sweat with fear. Though dead for an entire year, Rupert and his abuse still haunted her. Squaring her shoulders she swept his face and pain-giving fists from her mind.

“Violet, ’tis time to find Godfrey.”

“Aye, he’ll drive yer coach to the duke’s estate. How wonderful a time ye shall have! Dancing to the strains of an orchestra, smiling and mingling with men and women in their finery?” Violet twirled as if waltzing with an unseen man of the peerage. Within a heartbeat, she had pirouetted like a spinning top into the hallway.

Praying Violet continued on her way to find Godfrey, Adele slipped into a pair of silk shoes. To obtain something so delicate she’d traded a basket of apples from her small orchard. There were little enough stores to feed her and the servants through winter, but she wanted those new slippers.

A curdling scream had her turn toward the open bedchamber door.

Nancy Lee Badger's COVER REVEAL~

HERE IT IS!

This is my first foray into the Regency Historical genre, but I have set most of the story in Scotland, so NOT so different from my Clan of Dragons shifter series or my Highland Games time travel series.

This will be my 29th book release and, unlike my last three books in my Warriors in Bronze series, this one is self-published. When the book is up for pre-order, I will announce it with my newsletter.  I will also have a treat for my newsletter followers.
