Salute and Remember Our Troops

@Photo by Nancy Lee Badger
"Every citizen should be a soldier. This was the case with the Greeks and Romans, and must be that of every free state."--Thomas Jefferson

We no longer have a military draft, but thousands of our men and women volunteer to serve their country, to keep its citizens safe.

Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those who have died while serving in the various branches of the military of the United States of America.

Former President Lyndon Johnson declared it a national holiday in May 1966, and this year the USA celebrates it on Monday, May 30th. It is not as happy a holiday as Veteran's Day, where we celebrate our citizens who have served in our military. Memorial Day is a day to remember those who have given the ultimate sacrifice.

This weekend often includes trips to the beach, hikes through the mountains, gatherings with friends or families, and barbecues. Please take a moment to remember those we have lost. Here are a few who my family salute.
Joseph Abner Bean died in
Libby Prison during the Civil War

Lt. David Lee Johnson: Died in WW2
Sgt. Richard Ayers: Died in WW2
Pvt. Gerald Ayers: died in WW2
as well as...
Our distant cousin who died in Vietnam

Family visiting the New York Memorial at Gettysburg,
where our great-great-great uncle Enoch Lee served,
Enoch died later in the Civil War at Petersburg

What denotes a Hero? - by Nancy Lee Badger

A hero or heroine (or a novel's hero/shero)
refers to a fictional or historical character that displays courage and sometimes self sacrifice. Heroism is performed for the greater good, but in a romance novel things can heat up fast.

Stories of heroism may serve as moral examples. Hero worship can be a good thing or a bad thing. Many romance novels draw the reader in with descriptive paragraphs filled with the virtues of the hero, but some heroes are close to the edge of evil…until they meet the woman of their dreams.

Today’s romance novels are filled with action, adventure, intimacy, family, intrigue and a lot more. Happy Ever After is a must, yet the hero and heroine’s journey to get to that point takes twists and turns. Some we call black moments. Others are simple heartache. Through it all, the hero and heroine comes through thriving.

My dad is my hero.
Raising three little girls could drive any sane man nuts. We traveled cross country, had adventures which included traipsing about national parks and swimming in the ocean, learning new things, and witnessing him living his life loving our mom.

I am thankful for my Dad.

He served in the Navy during WW2. I am thankful that, at 88 years young, he is alive and enjoying life. However, we must remember those who have fallen in service to their country.

This Memorial Day, fly the flag and remember.

Here are a few of my family and my husband's family who served, but are no longer with us:
Lt.Col. Paul R Badger      Survived Vietnam/Korea/WW2
Cpt. Lester Bean Badger  Survived WW2 and WW1
Lt. Dorothea E. Sawyer    Survived WW2
Sp4 Bruce Lyle Badger    died in Vietnam
Lt. David Lee Johnson     died in WW2
David Ryder Johnson       Survived WW1
Sgt. Richard Ayers            died in WW2
Pvt. Gerald Ayers             died in WW2
Cpl. Enoch H. Lee            died in the Civil War
Pvt. Brownell W. Lee       wounded in the Civil War
Pvt. Joseph A. Bean         died in the Civil War

New Cover Reveal: Southern Fried Dragon

My Civil War romance is a fanciful story that takes place in Charleston, South Carolina on the eve of the first shots fired at Fort Sumter. Understand, this is first and foremost a story about a simple serving girl with a past who is saved by a Federal soldier during uneasy times. A recent survey concluded that, though my book was a wonderful read, the cover was confusing (see the original cover below) My hope is that the book will find more readers. Here is an excerpt:
He backed her against a shadowy wall and pressed against her, returning her attention to his rock-hard body. The swift surge of passion thrilled her with the power their shared kiss conjured. The second kiss was a joy-filled surprise that swiftly turned into a carnal promise of things to come.
With her fingers entangled in his silky locks, she wiggled her hips, yearning to get closer. He groaned, and pressed her between the hard planks of the wall and the steel planes of his chest. His tongue slid across her lips until she opened beneath his touch, welcoming him inside. She now knew what to expect. She now craved his intimate strokes within the sensitive curve of her mouth.
Prickles of desire brought a moan from deep within her throat, and the pleasure dampened the secret area between her legs. She never would have believed the fire inside could flame even brighter. She yearned for more.
Much more.
When he broke the kiss, Dru cried out with disappointment.
“I should not keep taking advantage, Miss…you neglected to share your name.”
Southern Fried Dragon Reviews:
“The twists and turns, secrets, and conflicts that arose kept me turning the pages. Nancy Lee Badger is a keen storyteller who draws you in and keeps you reading until you get to the happily-ever-after.”
“The story will have you turning the pages to see what will happen next and will Dru take a chance.”
“Another great book by Nancy Badger! Very interesting, entertaining and fun to read. Intermingling the Old South with everything else was so unexpected. Everyone who loves romance novels needs to read this one!”

And the 13 Ebook Winners are...

I have chosen the winners and have emailed them. A couple DID NOT leave their email addresses. I am hoping to contact them soon.

Congratulations to all the winners of my historical paranormal romance,
SOUTHERN FRIED DRAGON

Around this time last year, while researching a book, I stumbled on this great website: (click for link)
The website consists of numerous links surrounding a Civil war time line. How cool is that! All you do is click on the century, the decade, and the year, scroll down to the month and day, and there you have it! What a great research tool for someone writing Civil War stories. Since I was writing Southern Fried Dragon, my paranormal set on the eve of the American Civil War, this was priceless. I thought I would look to see what happened in my birthday month, in the year before war was declared. Since I start my story in this time frame, I came across some interesting tidbits. Check it out!
November 6, 1860
Republican Abraham Lincoln wins the Presidential election with 39.7% of the vote, defeating Stephen Douglas, John Breckinridge and John Bell.
November 9, 1860

South Carolina calls for a convention on December 17 to decide if the state should secede from the Union

November 10, 1860
James Chesnut becomes the first Southerner to resign from the Senate. He is quickly followed by James H. Hammond

November 12, 1860
In Preston County, Western Virginia holds its first organizational meeting, expressing a desire to "adhere to the Union".

November 13, 1860 (my birthday, though years later!)
At the end of a fiery, pro-secession speech, Robert Toombs announces his resignation from the U. S. Senate at the end of his term.

November 14, 1860
In Milledgeville, Alexander Stephens gives a response to Toombs' speech the day before, calling for a meeting of southern states to discuss secession.

November 23, 1860
Major Robert Anderson (who is mentioned in my book) reports Fort Sumter is being threatened in Charleston as federal forces begin to improve Fort Moultrie and Fort Sumter in the harbor. (both forts are in my book!)
My book takes place in and around the city of Charleston, South Carolina and Fort Sumter, which lies in the harbor nearby. It was a fun story to write since, with my love of dragons, I twisted history just a bit to include a Scottish dragon-turned-bar maid who meets a handsome soldier.
Here is an Excerpt:
Rated PG-13

He backed her against a shadowy wall and pressed against her, returning her attention to his rock-hard body. The swift surge of passion thrilled her with the power their shared kiss conjured. The second kiss was a joy-filled surprise that swiftly turned into a carnal promise of things to come.

Prickles of desire brought a moan from deep within her throat. She never would have believed the fire inside could flame even brighter. She yearned for more.
Much more.
When he broke the kiss, Dru cried out with disappointment.
“I should not keep taking advantage, Miss…you neglected to share your name.”
She laughed. Yes, she’d forgotten he’d asked, as any human male would. Names were a big thing between humans. Saddled by the name of the woman whose life she’d overtaken, she had nothing to hide. As time wore on, she’d grown to like it.
“Dru Little.”
He smiled and bowed at the waist, picked up his bent loaf of bread and stepped back. “I must leave ye, now.”
“Getting back to Fort Moultrie?”
He nodded while his thumb wiped a raindrop from her cheek. “I will return in a week, at a more appropriate hour. Goodnight, Miss Little.”
As he retreated into the dark, she glared at his back. Why did he have to leave now? Kissing him could lead to a variety of pleasurable things and she desperately wanted to experience them. Her human body reacted uniquely different from her scaled dragon form, but he spoke the truth. No normal human woman would make love to a man she just met.
What was I thinking?

POSITIVE QUOTE OF THE WEEK

The past few days have been filled with recollections on TV and radio of the September 11, 2001 tragedy. I watched the stories and recalled how I felt that day. I was at work at the 9-1-1 center in New Hampshire, less than 50 miles from Boston, where the first airplane hailed.

Unfortunately, war and terrorism have been around a long time, even in our young country.
