On Winning an Award - Smiling!

I was pleasantly surprised during my local Romance Writers of America chapter's Zoom meeting. They announced the 2021 winner of the Christine Hyatt Award. Named for a founder of our chapter, it is awarded to a member of the Heart of Carolina Romance Writers whose membership has helped the chapter in some way.

i was very surprised and pleased to receive this honor! As a writer, belonging to a group of writers such as HCRW makes writing alone at my desk easier. I look forward to the monthly meetings, but we also keep in contact via emails and social media. I look forward to returning to in-person meetings!

I received two plaques. One is the annual award and the other describes all I have done for the chapter over the years, including my reign as its president several years ago. I also was given a lovely bracelet and was taken to lunch by two volunteers. Thank you to all the members of the Heart of Carolina Romance Writers for thinking of my and what I have accomplished as a member.

Are you a writer or wondering how to get more help from other writers? Consider joining RWA and HCRW. We would love to help you grow!

Nancy Lee Badger: Cinnamon Coffee Cake and a Book by HCRW

Spring is nearly here and what a better time to share the love of my adopted state, North Carolina. Today's recipe is quick, easy, and delicious. Eat it on a spring morning while reading the new anthology by the authors of the Heart of Carolina Romance Writers.

Nancy's Low Sugar Cinnamon Coffee Cake

1/4 Cup salad oil

3/4 cup milk

1 egg

1 1/2 Cups all-purpose flour

3/4 Cup Splenda

2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

3/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 Cup fresh or frozen blueberries (optional)

topping: 1/3 Cup brown sugar

1/4 Cup all-purpose flour

3/4 teaspoon cinnamon

3 Tablespoons cold butter cut into pieces

Preheat oven to 375 degree F. Grease or spray with nonstick spray a 9 inch round pan. By hand or with a mixer, combine salad oil, milk and egg. Blend together flour, Splenda, baking powder, and salt then slowly add to liquids for 1 minute. If including blueberries like I usually do, gently fold into the batter then spread into the pan.

In another bowl, combine brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, and butter. Using dough blender, fork, or your bare hand, crumble the topping then sprinkle onto the cake.

Bake 25-30 minutes or until a knife inserted in the middle comes out clean. Cool.

The sweetness is lovely. Yes, you can use real sugar. I used to have sugar-free brown sugar but have not been able to find it in years. If you have some, use it in the topping. This coffee cake has healthy spices as well as fruit (if you add blueberries) and makes a good wake-up meal alongside a cup of tea or decaf coffee. Making food from scratch with no preservatives is a healthy alternative to store-bought.

Entertainment during this pandemic is also healthy for a person's well-being so remember to READ BOOKS.

Happy New Year

Many tell me they are happy 2016 has passed and are looking forward to a better 2017. I have decided to do the best I can to make my year better, and three simple words shall lead me down this path...

It kind of reminds me of Yoda. Anyway, I will soon release SMOLDER, Book #3 in my Clan of Dragons series. I am working on a prequel to the series, a novella that will add a bit of magic.

As the newly elected president of my local RWA chapter, I have embarked on a higher path to help lead others toward their goal to succeed as writers. Wish me luck!

Preview of The Melting, Book One - The Infection by Donna Steele

Please welcome author Donna Steele, who shares some exciting news!

Thanks so much, Nancy for having me here today! I am so excited. The first book in my Melting series – The Infection – is coming out June 3. This is a story very close to my heart and I've loved writing it. The first book would be considered science fiction but the story morphs into paranormal as the series progresses. I've played with this idea for ages, years even and getting to share it finally is a dream come true.

A little morbid maybe, but I've always loved those stories of the end of the world and the day after – The Hammer of God by Larry Niven, On the Beach by Nevil Shute and of course The Stand by Stephen King. I love the way the characters cope and move on (or don't as the case may be). I also love to incorporate green and sustainability into my stories, and I was able to do both here.
I'll be giving an ARC to one lucky commenter today.
David and Amanda feel like old friends now and I enjoy visiting with them. Book two is completed and will be sent off shortly, and three is well underway. Thought I'd share an excerpt with you today –

Book 1 -
Amanda was late again. She really needed to work on her time management skills. She slipped her key into David's door to let herself in. His car sat out front but he was often in the shower when she arrived, which saved them both a lot of time in getting naked. She wanted to laugh at the wicked grin she could feel on her face.
He was at the door before she could open it fully and he did not look happy. In fact, he looked upset and could there be a little fear? "David?"
"Could I meet you—" David began but a female voice interrupted.
"You're not going to let your little friend in?"
Amanda heard the uber-confident female voice. Was this the famous Phyllis? It had to be for him to look this uncomfortable. She and David had not talked about Phyllis after the first time they'd been together. David had obviously not wanted to discuss her. Amanda knew instinctively this was the woman she had not sent any thank you note.
David closed his eyes, but opened them at the feel on her hand on his. "It's okay. I want to meet her."
He seemed to attempt to relax and took a deep look into her eyes, then he stepped back.
Amanda moved forward before the other woman could, her hand out. "Hello, I'm Amanda Sutton." Ah, it was the brunette from the cocktail party.
"Phyllis Lawrence, an old friend of David's." She shook Amanda's hand firmly, eyeing her. There seemed to be a look of recognition in her eyes. She obviously noted when Amanda lay her purse casually on the table in a familiar manner.
"Please, why don't we all sit down?" Amanda moved to the couch, acting as hostess and saw David quickly assume a bland expression, though his eyes were smiling. "Would you like something to drink?" She offered to Phyllis.
The woman seemed unhappy with her. Amanda was a little surprised herself at her chutzpah. But it felt good and right. She and David were together, more together than anyone had ever been in her life. David had her back and Phyllis seemed more than a little uncertain at the way things were moving.
Reluctantly Phyllis took a seat in the chair as David perched on the arm of the couch, beside and above Amanda. Phyllis's eyes narrowed.
Amanda waited. One thing she had learned from her father was the power of silence. Women didn't like it and tried to fill it up. As his "son" she had done her best to emulate that kind of thing.  It seemed to be working.
Phyllis finally spoke, though her annoyance at being the one to break the silence obviously bothered her. "How long have you two been seeing each other? I haven't heard David mention you."
"A little while. We met at some dull function on campus and escaped together." She smiled up at him and his hand lightly squeezed her shoulder.
"Have you known David long?" One of those conversations, so Amanda might as well jump on in. She already knew the answer.
"Yes. We've been friends for years. He was only a lecturer when we met."
Amanda smiled. "A lot of things have changed. Tenure and full professorship."
Phyllis's smile diminished, she'd heard what had really been said. "Well, I guess I need to be on my way. I only stopped by to see if David was free for an art show tonight."
David, already rising to get the door, spoke. "Sorry. I'm sure it would have been fun, but we do have plans," Amanda smiled and allowed the other woman to stand above her. The looming didn't bother Amanda at all. She saw clearly when Phyllis noted her easy confidence.
"Well, it was good seeing you." Phyllis gave David's cheek a quick kiss and she left the apartment.
With what looked like disgust on his face, David shut the door and joined her on the couch, his head hanging. Amanda wiped the bright red lipstick from his cheek and he followed suit, to ensure every bit of the color was totally obliterated.

Even though Donna's book isn't coming out until June, you can get a taste of her wonderful writing by downloading her other books. i just finished reading Wraith's Heart. I didn't think a ghost story could bring me to tears, but this was awesome!-Nancy Lee

Nancy Lee Badger Interviews Laura Browning

I invited author Laura Browning to talk about her latest book.
Broken Heart is a contemporary romance and was released on October 1st.
Please tell my readers a little bit about your book. Broken Heart is the fourth book in a series about a family that is a cross between the Hearsts of newspaper fame and the Kennedys.  Each book is a stand-alone, and this one is about Stacey Barlow-Barrett. Stacey is married, but not happily. When her marriage blows up, it’s the lover she dumped who’s there to pick up the pieces. Stacey travels a very rough road to a happily ever after, but it’s also an HEA that includes some big changes on her part.
Describe the genre of this particular title, and is it the only genre you write in? Broken Heart, and its sister stories, are all contemporary romance, which is what I primarily write. I have also written a couple of paranormals involving Selkies, and self-published three vampire novels.
Why have you become a published author? I have to write. I would suspect that’s the response a lot of writers make. I suppose I could have continued to write and never have sought publication, but that would be, as my husband said, like the woodcutter who cuts and stacks his logs in the forest and then simply lets them lie there rather than warming someone’s hearth. I hope my books warm someone’s heart or just provide some relaxation and entertainment.
What is your writing routine like?  I wish I had a routine. Right now, while I’m working on my master’s degree, there is no routine. I write fiction on those rare occasions when I have some free time. At the moment, the majority of my writing is research-based papers.
Are you a member of any writing organizations and, if so, have they helped? I am a member of Romance Writers of America and the Heart of Carolina Romance Writers Chapter. I cannot say enough about how helpful this has been. I have met some wonderful people, made great friends, and received invaluable craft and business information. RWA and its member chapters are wonderfully supportive to all writers.
Will you share some encouraging words for authors still struggling for that first contract?  Don’t. Give. Up. I am firmly convinced that being a successful, published author is the result not only of luck, but persistence. I always think of that saying about lottery games—you can’t win if you don’t play. Well, you can’t be published if you don’t submit your work.
Please Share three fun facts about you that most people don’t know.
1) I have an EMMY from when I worked in television news, but the really unusual thing about it is we have the statue on the mantelpiece…sitting on top of the handmade wooden box holding my father-in-law’s ashes. Before you say, wow, this woman’s really weird…my father-in-law was gravely ill at the time I was supposed to travel to the EMMY awards ceremony. My husband insisted I go because he said that’s what his dad would want, even though I insisted I had a snowball’s chance in you-know-what of winning. I went, I won, and shortly after I returned, my father-in-law passed away. When we set his ashes on the mantel, I jokingly picked up the statue and said, “Pa, this is for you,” and set it down…the base of the statue exactly fit the lip of the box. So there they both stay, together.
2) I’ve ridden in a Swiss Army rescue chopper along with a Great Dane as part of an airlift off a mountain after a train malfunctioned.
3) I once punched a Frenchman in the face while riding a train from Zurich to London.

What’s next for you? Right now it’s concentrating on completing my master’s degree in education.

BOOK BLURB
Stacey Barlow-Barrett has the perfect life–or, at least, the illusion of one. She’s married to the man her parents approved, and she’s making it work. But keeping up appearances is wearing her down. Her husband, Jace, wants to start a family. Her former lover, Mason, is a business associate she can’t cut off, and he twists the knife at every opportunity. Trying to make everyone happy–everyone except herself–has her on the verge of a breakdown.

When Jace’s best friend moves in, everything that seemed tenuously tolerable is now completely unbearable, and Stacey realizes something is very wrong in her marriage. Jace is keeping up appearances too, and it’s at Stacey’s expense.

Mason is the only one she can turn to for help…if he can forgive her for marrying Jace while the sheets were still warm from their last encounter. And even if he does forgive her, and she does dig her way out of the mess her marriage has become, Stacey may not be ready for what he needs in return: love.

MORE ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I live in the rolling country of central North Carolina in the middle of a small farm along with my husband and son. My background with horses and journalism was the initial impetus for this series, of which Broken Heart is the fourth book. In addition to writing, I teach high school English to at-risk students and am currently studying for a master’s degree in education. In my non-existent spare time, I enjoy spending time with my family and my menagerie, now down to one horse, four dogs, a cat, and a lizard (who really isn’t the most exciting pet).

Nancy Lee Badger Interviews Reese Ryan

Reese Ryan stopped by for an indepth interview. Her book, Making the First Move is a contemporary romance and was released July 22, 2013.

Don't forget to scroll down and sign-up for a chance to win GREAT PRIZES during her BLOG TOUR.
Please tell my readers a little bit about your book.
Making the First Move is about two people who struggle with painful pasts in a way that threatens their prospects for a happy future. Melanie Gordon obsesses over her career as a way to hide from the pain of her father’s death and a devastating break-up. Raine Mason is a selfless, committed philanthropist who has a mysterious past that left him with physical and emotional wounds.  Their relationship and the obstacles it encounters provide them both with an opportunity to reassess their lives and shed learned identities that are holding them back.

Reese Ryan
Describe the genre of this particular title, and is it the only genre you write in?
For me, contemporary romance encompasses many things. The typical love-in-the-here-and-now stories we expect, but also new adult, romantic suspense, and romantic women’s fiction. This title and my December release are both contemporary romances, but both stories are very much about the heroine’s journey—as much as they are about the romance that is central to it. However, future stories in the works include a new adult trilogy and a romantic thriller.
What inspired you to write your first book?
A fellow copywriter told me about National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo). It sounded insane, but I was also intrigued. I started my first fiction novel since high school while participating in the event the following year. Making the First Move was a NaNo project I started in maybe the first or second year I participated. A few years later I went back and finished it.
I tried NaNoWriMo last year for the 1st time! Loved it! How did you get into romance writing?
It was only within the last two years that I really came to realize, and embrace, the fact that I’m a romance writer. I was an avid YA reader in middle school and high school. Several years later, when I started reading fiction again, it was during the height of Chick Lit’s popularity—a genre I still love. So I hadn’t read very many pure romance novels and I considered myself a Chick Lit and then a women’s fiction writer. When Carina Press acquired this novel as a contemporary romance I started to really examine all of my stories. They deal with the heroine’s journey and family drama—yet a romance is always central to the story. It was one of those moments when you finally figure out what everyone else already knows.
Ha! Took me until my fifties to figure writing was my passion. Life got in the way. Who first introduced you to the love of reading?
My parents. I thank them for that in the acknowledgements of every book I’ve written.

My parents are my loudest cheerleaders! I met you at a meeting of our local chapter of Romance Writers of America. Has your membership helped?
One of the best things I did as a writer was to join RWA—even when I thought I was strictly a women’s fiction writer. Membership in my local Heart of Carolina chapter and two online chapters has brought me a wealth of knowledge and encouragement. Also, being a member of other local writing groups has introduced me to some outstanding local writers and to my current critique group.
Will you share some encouraging words for authors still struggling for that first contract?
I had three completed manuscripts when Carina Press acquired Making the First Move. I’d sent queries to a few agents on two of the manuscripts—including this one.  Then I stumbled across a pitching session to another digital-first publisher. They requested the full manuscript. That opened my eyes to this medium. So I submitted to several others. Out of the five publishers I submitted to I received two contract offers and one request for a revise and resubmit. So while it has become more challenging to get published traditionally, the rapidly changing industry offers so many opportunities for new writers. So keep writing. Keep improving your craft. Learn as much as you can about available options and choose the one that’s right for you.
Share three fun facts about you that most people don’t know.
1) I just might be the oldest blanket baby in the history of blanket babies.
2) As a kid I hated playing outside because I didn’t like that outdoors smell my great aunt in Mississippi refers to as “fresh.”
3)I conquered my fear of heights to climb Dunn’s River Falls in Jamaica. Now I’m trying to work my way up to ziplining in the Costa Rican rainforest.
What’s next for you?
Jamie Charles—the best friend character in Making the First Move—gets her own story, tentatively titled Love Me Not. It will be released in December. I’m currently planning my first novella—a contemporary romance based on Leslie Morales, another character in Making the First Move and a new adult trilogy.

Melanie may finally be ready to give Raine her heart…but then she discovers startling news that causes her to question everything she knows about him. A little bit about the author
Reese Ryan writes sexy, contemporary fiction filled with colorful characters and sinfully-sweet romance. She secretly enjoys torturing her heroines with family and career drama, reformed bad boys, revealed secrets, and the occasional identity crisis, but always rewards them with a happily ever after.
Born and raised in the Midwest, she now resides in Central North Carolina with her husband and young adult son who tolerate her propensity to sing and dance badly. A self-proclaimed Bohemian Southern Belle, she treads the line carefully between being a Northerner and a damned Yankee–despite her insistence on calling soda pop. Reese gauges her progress by the number of “bless your lil’ hearts” she gets each week. She is currently down to two.
